Starla had said that just flipping the table wasn't enough. So Garret grabbed a chair and, right in front of Darleen and Fairfax, smashed the dining table to pieces.
The crashing sounds of the chair hitting the table—bang, crack, shatter—reverberated through the room like a demonic symphony, twisting in everyone’s gut.
Darleen flinched as if the chair had struck her directly.
“What do you think you’re doing? This is my house!” she shrieked, repeating the sentiment again and again. But no one paid her any attention. Her words vanished into the chaotic noise.
The dining table was completely destroyed, leaving the entire room in a state of utter ruin.
Starla turned to Fairfax, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Are you satisfied now?”
Fairfax was speechless.
Darleen could only stammer, “You… you… you…”
“Are you about to curse me out?” Starla’s eyes turned cold. “If you do, it’ll be about more than just a slap this time. I’ll have them rip your mouth right off your face.”
Darleen froze. The insults she was about to hurl died in her throat, swallowed back down in the face of Starla’s chilling threat.
She turned her fury on Fairfax instead. “You see this? She dares to treat me this way right in front of you! Are you still going to let her stay here? Tell me, what’s the point of continuing this marriage?” she screamed, her voice raw with rage. She couldn’t stand it for another second.
Fairfax stared at Starla, his body trembling with anger, his hands clenched into tight fists. Finally, he ground out each word through gritted teeth, “I’ll have the divorce papers drawn up. If that’s too slow for you, we can go to the courthouse right now and get it done!”
“Have you forgotten something?” Starla asked calmly.
Seeing their desperation, Starla chuckled. “Look at the scene you’re all making. All I want is to be a good daughter-in-law to the Yelchin family. Why are you so insistent on a divorce?”
“A good daughter-in-law?” Darleen shot back. “Have you taken a look at what you’ve done since yesterday?”
“What have I done?” Starla asked innocently.
“You locked me out of my own house this morning! That’s what you did!”
“And me!” Xenia chimed in, now wrapped in a blanket and feeling a bit warmer. The memory of shivering and starving outside, however, still made her want to strangle Starla.
“You were the one who set the rules,” Starla replied coolly. “Are you saying you don’t have to follow them, but expect everyone else to?”
