So, Herbert had even sent a man to protect her. What, did he think the Yelchins were going to eat her alive? The thought of Herbert and Starla together made Fairfax's lungs ache with rage.

Just as Starla was about to head to Creek Haven, a call from an unknown number came through. She answered it. "Hello?"

"It's me."

The shrill, grating voice of Xenia came through the phone.

Starla frowned. She had never liked Xenia, whose unpleasant voice was always laced with sarcasm, especially now, when it was dripping with arrogance.

Starla's eyes narrowed. "What do you want?"

"Did you block my number?" Xenia demanded.

"So?"

Her tone was flat, devoid of the deference she used to show. In fact, for the past six months, she hadn't tolerated any nonsense from the Yelchins. Before, when things were good with Fairfax, she could ignore their petty slights. But recently, she had given as good as she got.

Xenia scoffed. "So you're ignoring the Yelchins now? You're nothing without this family."

Her disdain was palpable now. Xenia had always looked down on her, but never this openly. Today’s blatant contempt was clearly fueled by the incident with Brinley.

Starla let out an identical, cold laugh. "And what are you without the Yelchins?"

The same words, fired right back.

"You! How could I not have the Yelchins? I am a Yelchin. You're the one who's nothing in this family!"

"You want a divorce?" Xenia screeched.

"Are you blind? Didn't you see the divorce agreement that was sent out?"

"Have you lost your mind? If anyone's leaving anyone, it's Fairfax leaving you. Who do you think you are?"

"Fine," Starla said coolly. "Then have Fairfax file. I'll sign. How about that?"

Xenia was dumbfounded. Where on earth was this woman getting her courage?

Before Xenia could spew another word, Starla hung up. The dial tone buzzed in Xenia's ear, and she stomped her foot in fury.

The nerve of that broke girl! She'd be starving without them, and she dared to demand a divorce? Hilarious!
