A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 424

“You think this is pushing it too far?” Starla scoffed softly.

With that, she rose and glided up the stairs, leaving no doubt that there would be no car.

Her mind drifted back to a time of unbearable pain. To her mother, who could have been saved. She wouldn’t have died if the Yelchin family had simply taken her to the hospital after her fall. But they hadn’t. They must have thought it was nothing serious, that she wouldn’t die. And so now…

Downstairs, Darleen and Fairfax stared at Starla’s retreating back, seething with a powerless rage.

Xenia, realizing a trip to the hospital was not going to happen, whispered, “I’m okay, Fairfax. I don’t need to go.”

Besides, it was humiliating. And more importantly, they were broke. What could they even do at a hospital with no money?

Darleen’s frustration boiled over into theatrical sobs. “My poor Xenia! That vicious woman, she truly wants us all dead! I’m going to kill her!”

She made a move toward the kitchen, intending to grab a knife, but the doorway was blocked. Spinning around, she lunged for the fruit knife on the table, but a cold voice stopped her in her tracks.

“If you value your hand, Mrs. Yelchin, I suggest you don’t move.”

It was Garret, one of Starla’s men. His voice was flat and dangerous, carrying the implicit threat that he would sever her hand without a second thought.

Darleen froze. Xenia and Fairfax paled, the last of their fight draining away. In their own home, they were utterly helpless, their anger as effective as punching cotton.

“What are we going to do? What can we do?” Darleen wailed, turning to Fairfax with tear-filled eyes. The rage returned, and she redirected it at him. “I told you from the beginning not to let her into this family! A woman like that, did you really think she wanted nothing from you? But you wouldn’t listen!”

Fairfax ignored her, looking down at Xenia in his arms. “Are you feeling any better?”
