Darleen’s heart sank into a black abyss.
Familiar? Of course they were familiar. Her memory wasn’t what it used to be, but these last few days, Starla had been a constant, cruel reminder of things she’d long forgotten.
Harsh? She had never considered her words harsh at the time. But now, hearing them from Starla’s lips, they felt like the cruelest words ever spoken.
“It hurts, Mom… I hurt all over,” Xenia moaned, pulling Darleen from her horrified reverie. The fever was making her entire body ache.
Darleen looked at her daughter, her heart breaking.
“Xenia, what are we going to do?” she sobbed, clutching her daughter. “That demoness has ruined us! We can’t do anything!”
She had finally been pushed to the absolute edge by Starla. She was terrified of losing Xenia, her most beloved daughter.
“Call… call Susanna,” Xenia whispered weakly.
Susanna Yelchin! Of everyone in the family, she was the only one who had never gone out of her way to torment Starla. If anyone could get through to her, it might be Susanna.
“Okay, okay,” Darleen said, nodding frantically. “Let’s get you back to your room. Don’t lie here on the floor. The cold tiles will only make your fever worse.”
Darleen tried to help Xenia up, but Brinley’s shriek echoed from downstairs.
“What about me? How am I supposed to get to the hospital? Mom, that’s your grandson! Are you just going to abandon him?”
