A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 64

“Mom,” Susanna said, her voice filled with disappointment. “When did you become so cruel?”

“What did you say? You’re calling me cruel?” Darleen’s face turned pale with rage.

“To Starla, you are cruel,” Susanna cut her off without hesitation. “You look down on her because of her background. You doubt her, and you humiliate her.”

As her daughter, she didn't mince words.

Darleen was trembling with anger. “You call me cruel? Look at what she’s done! Brinley just had a major surgery, and because of Starla, her wound has reopened twice in two days!”

“What has she done?” Susanna shot back. “Fairfax was with Brinley when she gave birth, while his own wife lost their baby. And you expected her to just sit back and take your abuse? If it were me, I would have killed you all by now!”

“You… you…” Darleen was so furious she felt dizzy. “I already told you…”

“You said her miscarriage report was fake?” Susanna scoffed. “Fake! Did you not see how pale she was at the hospital the other day?”

Darleen was silent.

The elevator doors opened, and Susanna angrily shook off her mother’s hand and stepped inside.

“Wait, you…” Darleen started, but it was too late. This girl was infuriating!

Susanna’s gaze was cold and clear. “After what you all did to her while she was miscarrying, you can’t blame her for what she’s doing to Brinley now.”

The doors slid shut, leaving Darleen standing there, momentarily stunned. Susanna’s confirmation that Starla had indeed miscarried was unexpected, but it stirred no guilt within her. In fact, a moment later, she had already convinced herself it was a lie.

“That’s ridiculous,” she muttered to herself as she turned back towards the room. “She was never pregnant. How could she have miscarried?”

Darleen’s face froze for a second before she quickly composed herself. “Today’s situation is much worse than yesterday,” she said, deflecting his question. “What’s your plan to get this under control?”

She wasn’t just worried about Brinley anymore. The entire Yelchin family and the Yelchin Group were now caught in the firestorm of a major public relations crisis.

Fairfax’s jaw tightened. The phrase ‘get this under control’ felt like a cruel joke. The internet was swarming with hundreds of social media accounts, all pushing the same narrative. It was an overwhelming, coordinated attack that was impossible to contain.

Seeing his silence, Darleen pressed on. “Brinley’s mother is on her way back as we speak. You know how she is. Brinley is her only daughter. If anyone hurts her, she’s capable of anything.”

It was a clear warning. If Fairfax couldn’t extinguish this fire before Harriet arrived, Harriet would take matters into her own hands and make Starla pay.

Everyone in Marina City knew that woman was ruthless, with a particular talent for handling things in the shadows. If Starla had truly crossed her, she was in for a world of pain.
