A blaze of fury erupted in Fairfax. What the hell was Herbert playing at, sending this man to shadow Starla, waiting on her hand and foot?
His eyes, cold and hard, locked onto her. He was daring her, testing her. “Let’s see if you have the nerve to get into another man’s car right in front of your husband.”
And she did. Without a moment's hesitation, she began to walk towards the Phantom.
In a flash, Fairfax was out of his car, storming towards her. He grabbed her arm just as she was about to get in.
“Fairfax!” Garret’s voice was a low warning as he moved to intervene.
“Get lost!” Fairfax snarled, shoving Garret’s hand away and pulling Starla forcefully towards his G-Wagen.
But Garret was persistent, stepping in front of them again.
“Garret, it’s fine. You can go back,” Starla said, her voice firm.
Garret, who had been ready for a fight, immediately stopped and nodded. “Yes, Miss.”
Starla said nothing more. This confrontation with Fairfax was inevitable. She couldn’t keep avoiding him forever.
Garret looked at her, his expression a mix of concern and unspoken words. Starla knew what he was thinking. Her brother might be a king in Yoran Country, but this was Marina City. This was her marriage, and not even he could interfere.
Fairfax practically threw her into his car and peeled away from the curb, the engine roaring. He drove like a man possessed, the speedometer climbing at an alarming rate. Starla, who was already prone to carsickness, felt a wave of nausea wash over her. After less than five minutes of the reckless driving, she couldn’t take it anymore. Her hand shot out, and she slapped him hard across the face.
The car screeched to a halt at the side of the road. Starla scrambled out and retched into the grass.
Fairfax ran a hand through his hair in frustration. He got out and offered her a bottle of water, but she slapped it out of his hand. The cap flew off, and the water spilled onto the ground.
His face darkened, but he turned and got another bottle from the car. By the time he turned back, she was already rinsing her mouth with water from her own bottle. Then, without a word, she started walking down the road, not even glancing back at him.
Her cold indifference was a constant, infuriating presence. It fueled his anger more than anything else. He got back in the car and drove slowly alongside her. “Get in.”
She ignored him, her pace unwavering. He pulled over again, got out, and forced her back into the passenger seat. This time, he drove at a much more reasonable speed, heading straight for Petal Villa.
Outside the villa, the scorch marks on the stone walls had been cleaned, a sign that the housekeeper had already dealt with the aftermath of their last fight.
He led her inside. Starla sat on the sofa, her face a mask of cold indifference, while Fairfax paced restlessly before pouring himself a stiff drink.
Her words hit him like a physical blow. She was telling him she didn’t care anymore.
This woman knew exactly how to twist the knife.
“Then what is it?” he growled, slamming his glass down on the table. “What has made you so damn angry?”
Her anger was so immense it had shaken the entire city, something the Yelchin family had never thought possible.
“Two years ago, she made me lose my child,” Starla said, her voice flat and cold. “Isn’t that enough?”
Fairfax froze.
“Or, in your world, am I supposed to be some kind of saint? Someone who just forgives and forgets when her child is killed?”
The mention of the child cast a dark shadow over the room. His expression hardened. “That was a long time ago,” he said dismissively. “And besides, it wasn’t intentional.”
“And what about my design for Draken Haven? The one she stole?”
