A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 82

Herbert was taking Starla to the hospital, and Garret motioned for two of his men to follow while he stayed behind to deal with Harriet.

...

Herbert carried Starla directly to his car. Caden jumped in with them, still bewildered.

“Fairfax’s phone is off? That witch Harriet comes back, and he’s not the least bit worried?”

Caden was furious. Herbert had called him moments ago, telling him to contact Fairfax because Harriet was at Petal Villa, but the call had gone straight to voicemail. Worried something would happen, he’d rushed over, only to run into Herbert.

Herbert’s expression was grim. He sat in the back with Starla, noticing how cold she felt. He immediately took off his suit jacket and wrapped it around her. Seeing this, Caden quickly shed his own and handed it to Herbert. “Here, use mine too.”

Herbert added it to the layers around her. They rushed Starla into the hospital. Caden went to handle the paperwork while Herbert carried her straight to the emergency room.

In Herbert’s arms, Starla’s consciousness was fading. “Thank you for today,” she murmured.

“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked.

Starla didn’t answer. The thought had never crossed her mind. When she realized something was wrong at Petal Villa, her first instinct was to call Garret.

“How did you know?” she asked. Herbert had arrived at almost the same time as Garret.

“What am I doing here? Fairfax, you should have been the one to bring…”

“Fairfax, the specialists have arrived,” the director interrupted, having just taken a call. Caden’s words were cut off.

Hearing that the team was here, Fairfax’s attention immediately shifted away from Caden. He turned and walked off with the director, discussing the child’s condition.

Caden watched him go and, in a fit of rage, kicked the nearby trash can. “Damn it!”

How did he end up with a friend like this?
