A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 85

Speaking of Fairfax, Caden didn't dare tell Herbert that he'd run into him while paying the hospital bill, only for Fairfax to be whisked away by matters concerning Brinley's child.

“No,” Caden lied. “I called Gabriel, and even he can't reach him at the office.”

What a mess. His own wife has a miscarriage, and he's not there. Now, with this crisis, he's still nowhere to be found.

Caden was now almost certain that Starla and Fairfax’s divorce was inevitable. After something this serious, with Starla's temperament, she would never forgive him. The rift between them, already deepened by Brinley over the last six months, had likely been shattered completely by the events of the past few days.

Herbert said nothing.

Caden looked at him. “Herbert, don’t tell me you have feelings…?”

He didn’t finish the sentence. It wasn’t just Fairfax who was suspicious. After hearing Herbert declare his support for the divorce the other night, Caden had started to wonder too.

Herbert didn't answer, just gave him a profound look.

Tanya came out of the room, saying she was going to get some food for Starla. As soon as she left, Herbert and Caden went inside.

Seeing them, Starla managed a weak smile. “Thank you both for today.” She hadn't expected either of them to show up at Petal Villa.

“Don’t thank me,” Caden said. “It was Herbert who called me. That’s how I knew Harriet went to see you.”

Starla turned her gaze to Herbert, her confusion deepening. How had he known?

Herbert glanced at his watch. “I’ll have a few bodyguards sent over.”

“You don’t have to, really…”

“Your brother grew up in Yoran Country. He isn't familiar with the customs here; he’s not that meticulous,” Herbert interrupted before she could finish.

His words—‘your brother grew up in Yoran Country’—shocked her. She looked at Herbert in disbelief, stunned that he knew so much. For a moment, her breathing hitched.

As if sensing her turmoil, Herbert met her gaze. “Faraday’s children will likely be Fairfax’s responsibility for the rest of his life.”

He didn’t spell it out, but the meaning was clear: as long as Fairfax felt indebted to Faraday, he would be entangled with Brinley forever.

Starla lowered her eyes, her voice muffled as she replied, “I know.”
