A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 94

“Fairfax, is there some kind of misunderstanding between us?” she tried, attempting to de-escalate.

“Misunderstanding? You tried to kill her today. Since when did you have the right to interfere in my life?”

Harriet froze. The sheer audacity of his language, so disrespectful and coarse, made her blood boil. “I… I didn't do anything!”

Fairfax arched a brow. “Really?”

“You can’t just listen to Starla’s side of the story!” Harriet retorted. “Who knows what she ate to make herself bleed like that, claiming she had a miscarriage. Besides, I am your sister-in-law’s mother. I’m your elder! How could you—”

A loud crash cut her off as Fairfax kicked the bedside table, sending everything on it scattering across the floor. The room was suddenly a mess of shattered glass and fallen items.

The raw violence of the act silenced Harriet completely. The sheer ferocity radiating from Fairfax stunned the normally imperious woman. She stared at him, a knot of fear tightening in her stomach.

Fairfax rose to his feet. He dropped the cigarette butt on the floor and crushed it under his shoe, then casually straightened his suit jacket. Responding to her repeated emphasis on being an ‘elder,’ he shot her a look of pure contempt. “If I were you, I’d expect Quest to have… an accident.”

“No!” Harriet shrieked, the word torn from her throat as she understood his threat. The usual victorious confidence in her eyes was replaced by raw panic. As someone who navigated both the city’s boardrooms and its underbelly, she knew exactly what Fairfax’s promise of an ‘accident’ meant. For the first time, Harriet was truly afraid.

But Fairfax was done with her. He shoved his hands in his pockets and walked toward the door.

Just as he reached it, Brinley and Darleen arrived. Seeing the wreckage inside the room, Darleen’s mind went blank.

“You brat!” she gasped. “What have you done now?”

Damn it, how could he still be so protective of her after everything? What had that girl told him? How could he possibly trust that orphan over them?

Harriet’s heart pounded with rage. “Please, just leave,” she said, her voice sharp with dismissal. “I need to be alone.”

Darleen wanted to say more, but faced with Harriet’s clear impatience, she swallowed her words. She glanced at Brinley in her wheelchair. “Brinley, dear, please take care of your mother.”

Brinley gave a small nod.

Seeing that Harriet truly wanted nothing to do with her, Darleen had no choice but to leave.
