Fairfax’s head felt like it was about to explode. All the public scandals over the past three days had already dragged Brinley and the entire Yelchin family through the mud. If she released anything else…
“You’re trying to force a divorce with these tactics?” he demanded, his voice dangerously low. “Are you that desperate to run off with Herbert?”
The mention of Herbert’s name made Starla snap. She grabbed the water pitcher from the bedside table and hurled it at him. It bounced off his shoulder and shattered on the floor. Her eyes blazed with fury.
“I almost died because of you, and you have the nerve to bring up Herbert? What right do you have?”
Her accusation—‘almost died’—was a clear reference to what had happened at Petal Villa that morning.
Fairfax’s breath hitched. “I told you, I will give you an explanation for what happened.”
“An explanation?” she scoffed. “Are you going to use Harriet’s life as payment? The time she wasted delaying that ambulance nearly cost me my life. And I’m the kind of person who likes to return favors… twofold. So, if you’re offering an explanation, her life seems like a fair trade, don’t you think?”
Her demand hung in the air, thick with malice. The tension in the room was suffocating.
Starla watched him, her eyes hard, while Fairfax’s breathing grew heavy and ragged. He was not a man who took provocations lightly, and she was deliberately pushing him to his limit. Just as she expected him to storm out, he let out a short, humorless laugh.
Starla stared, confused. Before she could react, he reached out and gently ruffled her hair.
The man on the other end was inaudible, but Fairfax’s entire demeanor had shifted. He was no longer the man who had been teasing and placating Starla; this was the dangerous, ruthless Fairfax.
After listening for a moment, a cruel smile touched his lips. “You want to negotiate? Fine. Tell her to come apologize to my wife in person.”
As he spoke, his eyes flickered toward Starla.
Hearing his words, she understood immediately. The call was from Harriet’s people. And Fairfax’s grand explanation was an apology?
