“Jennifer isn’t happy with me, but Ethan always has my back,” Isabella said, her voice calm. “His family didn’t want him to marry me, but he did it anyway.”
If anyone messed with her, it was like slapping Ethan in the face, since he was the one who insisted on marrying her in the first place. He was worried that if she ever got hurt, she’d end up resenting him even more, and maybe take it all out on Natalie. In the end, everything Ethan did always seemed to come back to Natalie.
Laura wasn’t clueless. She could see right through it. Ethan was only protecting Isabella because of Natalie. After a long, thoughtful pause, Laura finally spoke. “Are you really okay with letting him use you like this? Sure, you’re taken care of financially, but you’re basically living like a widow. Life is too long to waste it like that. It’s just not worth it.”
Isabella shrugged a little. “I never said I was planning to stay with him forever. Once our business takes off and we start making real money, I’ll ask for a divorce. I’m also trying to get over my feelings for him. It’s not easy, though. You can’t just turn off your heart. When he hurts me, it still hurts.”
She didn’t hide it. She still had feelings for Ethan. Letting go wasn’t something that happened overnight.
Laura let out a heavy sigh. “I just worry that if he’s ever nice to you again, you won’t be able to leave. When Ethan decides to treat someone well, he’s all in. He gives everything he has.”
And it was true. Ethan could be so attentive when he wanted to be. He was young, successful, and good-looking, with a family background that made everyone take notice. Even with that cold exterior, women still flocked to him.
“That’s not going to happen,” Isabella said quietly, her mind drifting to memories from her past life. She was determined. She wouldn’t let herself fall for him again. Sooner or later, she and Ethan would be over.
Her phone buzzed again.
Laura glanced over. “Is that Jennifer again?”
Isabella checked the screen, then shook her head. “It’s Natalie.”
Why was Natalie calling? In this life, Isabella wanted nothing more than to keep her distance from Natalie. Staying away meant staying safe from her schemes.
