“Why is everyone so quick to blame Isabella?”
A cool voice cut through the chatter. The woman who spoke stood tall, with striking features and long waves of hair cascading down her back. She wore a purple dress that flowed elegantly around her, and the jewels she’d chosen sparkled brightly in the light. It was obvious they cost a fortune. She’d arrived just a minute before Ethan and Isabella, hanging back outside to watch the scene unfold before joining in.
“Why not question Ethan for once? For all you know, he could be the one who set Isabella up. If I remember right, Ethan spent three whole months chasing after her before she finally agreed to marry him,” she said, her tone sharp but steady. “None of you remember how desperate he was to win her over?”
The room went quiet immediately. No one wanted to challenge her. This was Linda White, the only daughter of the White family. Her family was the second most powerful in the city and notorious rivals of the Adams clan. The Whites had more people in their family than the Adams, but both households had plenty of men and only a handful of women. Ethan, for example, had two sisters, one a blood relative and one a cousin, plus nine brothers and male cousins altogether. Douglas White, Linda’s cousin, only had her as a sister, and he doted on her completely. In Cabinda, Linda was as untouchable as Sophia Adams. No one dared to mess with her.
Benjamin, a big name in business, was the one who’d thrown this party and invited the White family too. Douglas didn’t show, so he sent Linda in his place. Linda was twenty-seven, two years older than Isabella.
“You can’t just treat Ethan like he’s perfect and walk all over Isabella just because her family isn’t as powerful as his,” Linda said, looking around at everyone. “Honestly, Isabella’s the one who’s getting the raw deal here. We’re all women. Can’t we show a little support for each other? Does putting her down really make you feel better about yourselves?”
No one responded. The crowd just stared at their shoes.
