In front of everyone, Natalie slipped right back into her usual act. She was all gentle smiles and soft words, quick to take the blame for anything that went wrong. Every time she did this, it just made whoever she was setting up look even worse, while she walked away with everyone praising her for being so generous and forgiving.
Jordan looked at Isabella, his eyes cold and sharp. “Isabella, what did Natalie ever do to you? Why are you treating her like this?” His voice was icy.
Isabella stood up, her tone calm and steady. “She didn’t do anything wrong. I’m the one who messed up. I should have left when she came over. This is on me.”
But whenever Natalie showed up, nothing good ever happened.
Jordan pressed on, clearly not buying it. “You still won’t admit it? Why would Natalie pour juice on herself? Isabella, you’re always lying. Every time something happens, you push the blame onto someone else and never own up to your mistakes. And to act out like this, in front of everyone… Ethan has spoiled you too much.”
He went on scolding her for a bit, then turned to Ethan. “Ethan, she’s your wife now. You need to keep her in check. Tell her to stop picking on my wife. You were sick, and instead of taking care of you, she left home and made us all worry. Natalie just wanted to talk to her tonight, to ask her to look after you. It couldn’t have been more than a few minutes before Isabella lost her patience. Look, Natalie’s dress is ruined.”
People in the crowd started whispering. Wait, what? The newlyweds were already fighting after just a month? Ethan had a cold, and Isabella didn’t even take care of him? Wasn’t he crazy about her before, always showing off how in love they were? Their wedding only a month ago was the event of the season. Now it looked like their marriage was already falling apart. Guess the honeymoon phase really doesn’t last.
Ethan kept apologizing. “Jordan, I’ll buy Natalie two new dresses to make up for this. Natalie, I’m so sorry. I should have kept a closer eye on Isabella.”
