He always took Jordan’s side, especially since he knew Jordan didn’t like Isabella. Growing up, Jennifer would tell him how hard Jordan’s life was, losing his mom so young and having to deal with a stepmother. She’d remind Ethan to protect Jordan and to come home and say something if Cynthia ever treated him badly. Their close family friends would always speak up for Jordan, making sure Cynthia couldn’t bully him.
So even when Ethan realized Natalie could be pretty dramatic, he let it slide. He figured Natalie only acted out because she had her reasons. Deep down, he still cared more about Natalie.
“Natalie, it’s just us right now. Can you tell me the truth?” Ethan’s voice was quiet and serious. “Last night, was that all you, or was it really Isabella’s fault?”
Natalie went still, panic flickering in her eyes. Was Ethan starting to question her? Was he not on her side anymore?
“Ethan...” Her anxiety lasted only a moment before she pulled herself together. She looked at him and admitted, “It was me. I set the whole thing up.”
Just as he suspected.
Ethan wasn’t sure what to feel. He hadn’t trusted his own wife. He’d ignored Isabella’s defense, even made her apologize in front of everyone. He realized now he’d been wrong about Isabella.
“Natalie, why did you do it?” The words were hard to get out. It hurt to think that the woman he’d loved for so long might not be as kind and thoughtful as he’d always believed.
