A few minutes later, the couple stepped into the president’s office.
Ethan set the two insulated lunch boxes on the coffee table and glanced at Isabella. “Did your series start filming yet?”
“Everything’s ready. We’re just waiting for the right day. Laura had her mom, Evelyn, ask a fortune teller to pick a lucky date for us. Turns out, we can start shooting tomorrow.”
“I’ll come by and check it out. Nothing can go wrong with this.” This was her first time investing in a series. She wasn’t expecting a smash hit, but she needed it to at least break even. That was the only way investors would see potential in her. This was her big chance.
Ethan pressed his lips together and spoke quietly. “Why didn’t you tell me? I know some really good fortune tellers who could’ve helped. Frank could have, too. He’s in charge of the film industry and always has a fortune teller choose the best day to start a new project.”
Isabella shook her head. “No need. I trust Evelyn.”
Evelyn was the kind of person who made you feel at home. She treated Isabella like her own daughter.
Ethan’s face tightened. “So you don’t trust me?”
Ignoring the question, Isabella sat down and opened one of the lunch boxes. She peeked inside, saw it was soup, closed it, and opened the other. “Would you trust someone who used you like a pawn and played with your feelings?”
Ethan went silent. He knew he’d messed up with her emotionally, but in every other way, he’d been genuine. Still, once trust is broken, it’s almost impossible to fix.
Isabella didn’t trust Ethan or Frank. Neither of them took her work seriously. To them, this was just a game. Evelyn was different. She was Laura’s mom, always rooting for her daughter’s business. She actually believed in fortune-telling and knew a few fortune tellers well. She’d made sure to pick someone reliable, someone who’d really care about choosing the right day.
“Your soup’s in the other box. Drink it while it’s hot,” Isabella said, already helping herself to the food.
Ethan sat beside her. He eyed the spread. “That’s a lot of food. Did Susan pack some for me too?”
