Jennifer stood staring at the closed door for what felt like forever before stomping back to her own room, still fuming. Susan had already unpacked her suitcase, setting everything out in perfect order. When she saw the stormy look on Jennifer’s face, Susan hurried to pour her a glass of warm water.
“Here, Jennifer, have some water.”
Jennifer took the glass and drank a couple of sips. After all that arguing with Isabella, her throat was dry. She set down the glass and started venting to Susan. “I told Ethan over and over that Isabella just isn’t right for him. I tried everything to get him to change his mind, but he wouldn’t listen. He insists on marrying her.”
She let out a frustrated sigh. “And look at her. She acts like I don’t even exist. She actually called me toxic and closed the door in my face. Can you believe that? No one’s ever dared treat me like that before.”
Back when Jennifer married into the Adams family, her own family was just as wealthy and powerful. It was a perfect match, both families strong and equal. But then her father made some terrible investments, and their whole business nearly went under. The Adams family stepped in to help. They managed to save the company, but after that, her father stepped down and handed everything to her older brother. Their status and wealth couldn’t keep up with the Adams anymore. Now, the Adams family was at the top of the social ladder, while her own family had slipped to second-tier status.
Still, Jennifer was the lady of the Adams household. Her mother-in-law was fair and never made things hard for her. She really had never suffered much at all.
Susan had worked for Isabella for a while and felt like she understood her. She hesitated, then said gently, “I think you might be misunderstanding. I don’t believe Isabella would call you toxic.”
Jennifer shot her a look. “What, did Isabella win you over? Are you on her side now?”
Susan lowered her head. “Jennifer, I’m loyal to Ethan, that’s all.”
Jennifer huffed. “I know Ethan trusts you. So tell me, how do he and Isabella get along? Are they really that happy together?”
Susan thought for a moment. “Ethan’s always busy, and Isabella is even busier. They hardly ever see each other. But Ethan treats her well. He really looks out for her.”
