After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 232

“Isabella. Isabella.”

Someone was calling her, their voice breaking through the darkness that held her captive.

“Isabella, wake up.”

It was Ethan. She realized it as the sound grew sharper, closer. She felt a tissue brushing softly against her cheeks.

“Were you having a nightmare?”

“Isabella, wake up… come on, wake up,” Ethan kept urging, still wiping away the tears that wouldn’t stop running down her face.

She must have fallen asleep and drifted into some terrible dream, because she was crying hard. The tears just kept coming, one after another, unstoppable. Seeing her like this hurt Ethan more than he wanted to admit.

She hadn’t cried this much since their wedding night.

Maybe she was dreaming about that night, about all the cold things he had said to her. Maybe it still hurt her enough to make her cry, even now.

Isabella opened her eyes.

She stared at Ethan, dazed and confused, not sure if she was awake or still dreaming.

“Isabella, what’s wrong? What did you dream about that made you cry so much?”

She looked completely wrecked, her face twisted in pain and hopelessness, like she’d lost everything.

Suddenly, Isabella’s hand shot up and she slapped him, hard. Ethan didn’t see it coming. His face turned red almost instantly from the sting.

The driver went silent.

This is bad, he thought. Really, really bad.

He wondered if he could just leap out of the car. He was terrified Ethan might take his anger out on him next.

Ethan slowly touched the side of his face, his eyes narrowed at Isabella.

Why did she hit him?

Was her nightmare really about him?

But it was just a dream, wasn’t it?

Isabella stared down at her own hand. Her palm tingled painfully from the force of the slap.
