Susan thought to herself, Isabella, I just wanted you to bring Ethan something to eat, to give you both a chance to make up.

“Isabella, if you brought Ethan breakfast, he’d be so happy.”

Susan, I really messed things up with him last night. It doesn’t matter what I bring him today. He won’t be happy. Walking over there with food would just give him an excuse to get back at me. I’m not that clueless.

Susan, I’m in a meeting. I can’t talk right now. Let’s catch up later.

Isabella ended the call.

“Isabella? Isabella…” Susan called out, but the line had already gone dead.

At least now Susan knew for sure. They had definitely fought last night, and it sounded like things got pretty intense. Maybe even physical. For some reason, though, Susan had a gut feeling that Isabella had come out ahead.

Back at the office, Ethan’s car was just pulling into the parking lot when he told the driver to stop. He rolled down his window and told the security guard, “If Mrs. Adams comes by, just let her in. Don’t stop her.”

The guards nodded, making a mental note. Mrs. Adams wasn’t a stranger around here anyway. She always had a free pass. No one would dare get in her way.

Inside the building, Ethan repeated the instructions to the two receptionists at the front desk. He even told his assistant that if Isabella showed up with breakfast, she should come straight to his office. No need to wait in the guest lounge.

He hadn’t eaten before leaving home, and he knew Susan would be worried. She’d definitely call Isabella and ask her to bring him something. The last time Isabella had brought him soup, he knew it was Susan pulling the strings.

But today, Ethan was only setting himself up for disappointment.

He kept glancing at the door, waiting. Breakfast never came.

By the time his meeting ended, he was so hungry his stomach hurt. Back in his office, he rummaged around for something, anything, to eat. He settled for a couple of pastries and a glass of water, just enough to take the edge off.
