Jordan finally realized Cynthia was still in the room. He put a gentle hand on Natalie’s arm and spoke softly, “Natalie, you really need to rest right now. Let me help you upstairs.”
Cynthia watched them as they went.
When they reached their bedroom, Natalie turned around and grabbed Jordan’s hand. Instead of letting him lead, she pulled him over and sat down on the couch, tugging him down beside her. “Jordan, I’m still bleeding,” she admitted quietly. “The medicine isn’t helping at all.”
She looked away for a second, her voice trembling. “I don’t think this baby is going to make it.” Sitting close to him, she let out a shaky breath. “We waited so long for this, and now... I’m just so heartbroken. I’ve cried so many times when no one was around.”
Jordan wrapped an arm around her, trying his best to comfort her. “Natalie, let’s get some more opinions. We can check out other hospitals. Maybe the equipment at Central Hospital just isn’t good enough.”
Natalie shook her head. “Jordan, that’s the best hospital in the city. Their equipment is top-of-the-line. It’s not about that.”
She drew in a slow breath. “There’s no heartbeat, no sign of growth. The embryo just stopped developing. No matter how much we want to hold on, it won’t change anything. In the end, I’ll still have to let go.”
“I’m going to check again in a few days. If there’s still nothing, I’ll have to go through with the procedure.” She spoke with a calmness that Jordan didn’t have.
He looked completely shattered. “How could this happen? We’re both healthy. Our baby...” He broke off, unable to finish. The thought of losing the child they’d waited so long for was just too much.
“Do you think it’s because of stress?” Jordan asked suddenly. “Did Isabella upset you and make things worse?”
