Lately, Mia had been coming back to the country more and more. Every time she did, Jennifer would call Ethan and tell him to come home too.
Mia was Jennifer’s goddaughter. Still, Ethan was pretty sure Jennifer had something else in mind. She wanted Mia to end up marrying him. No one ever said it out loud, but he could feel it. It was just there, hanging between the lines.
“It’s me,” he said.
“What are you doing here? Why did you come back?” Ethan asked, not bothering to sound polite.
He honestly hated it when Mia came home. Whenever she showed up, Jennifer always found some new way to get on his nerves. Still, his parents and even Sophia adored Mia, way more than they ever liked Natalie.
“Don’t talk like that. Mia’s job got transferred back here,” Jennifer said. She’d called Mia and told her to come home early, and Mia had actually listened. Only after Mia arrived did Jennifer find out she wasn’t just visiting—she was staying for good, planning to settle down in Cabinda.
Jennifer was thrilled. With Mia around, she finally had a real shot at getting her together with Ethan.
And as for Isabella… Jennifer couldn’t help rolling her eyes at the thought. As soon as the doctor confirmed Ethan was healthy, she’d figure out a way to break up his marriage. A relationship between people from such different worlds was never going to last. In her mind, only Mia belonged in the role of Mrs. Adams.
Mia could actually help Ethan with his business too. Isabella, on the other hand, had just been an average office worker before marrying Ethan. She didn’t have any special skills. She depended on Ethan for everything. Other than her looks and nice figure, Jennifer couldn’t see a single reason to like her.
