After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 365

“Deborah, Jordan is at the office,” Jackson said, sounding tired. “If you come by and he sees you, I’m worried it’ll upset him.”

“He’s known about us for ages, Jackson. It’s not like today is some big revelation. Everyone who matters already knows what’s going on. The only reason your wife doesn’t is because everyone’s been covering for you.”

She wasn’t wrong. Most of the business guys Jackson hung out with had mistresses. As long as the other woman didn’t start drama or turn up pregnant, the wives usually just ignored it. They understood it wasn’t really about them. Their husbands made money, got bored, and started chasing after younger, prettier girls. Unless someone wanted to go to extremes, there wasn’t much that could stop them.

And everyone in their circle knew about Deborah. Jackson took her along to dinners, parties, even little getaways.

“Now your wife knows the truth. Are you really going to keep making me live in the shadows? You told me you loved me. You promised you’d take care of me, always.”

She took a breath. “And what about our son? Kevin looks exactly like you. He keeps asking why his dad can’t come to his parent-teacher meetings. Why he can’t just call you ‘Dad’ whenever he wants. He’s a smart kid. The older he gets, the more he’ll understand what’s really happening. I can live with the shame, but Kevin’s innocent. As parents, we’re supposed to take the hits so our kids don’t have to.”

Jackson rubbed his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. “Deborah, Cynthia wants a divorce. She’s already moved out of the house. I... I might not love her anymore, but she’s a good wife. With her around, everything at home is stable. I don’t have to worry.”

“So I don’t want a divorce,” he finished, sounding more certain than he felt.

Deborah said she didn’t care about being the official wife, but Jackson knew she was hoping for it.

“Anything Cynthia can do, I can do too,” Deborah shot back.

“I’ve had enough of hiding. I’m bringing you coffee and pastries, and from now on, I’m going to look after you in the open. Your wife knows, so why should I keep sneaking around?”
