“And you have the nerve to call me names. Sure, maybe I’m shameless, but your dad’s not any better. We’re a matched set, you know.”
Jackson just stared at her, lost for words.
Jordan’s face was dark with anger. “Shut up. I’m talking to my dad, not you. Who do you think you are? Just because you gave him a son, don’t get any ideas about joining the Lane family. Let me make it clear. Never going to happen. Not even in your dreams.”
“Jordan.” Jackson’s voice was sharp and commanding. “Go back to work. Now.”
Jordan realized his father was truly angry and, even worse, taking Deborah’s side. His own anger burned hotter but he knew it wasn’t the time to argue. Clutching his files, he glared daggers at Deborah, spun around and stormed out. The door slammed behind him with a loud bang that made the new secretary look up from her desk. Jordan didn’t care. He marched back to his own office, his expression stormy.
After he left, Jackson took a deep breath and turned to Deborah. “I told you not to come here. Jordan works in the same building. Whenever you show up, he’s bound to find out. Now he’s seen you in person. Ever since the news about us got out, he’s been arguing with me nonstop.”
Deborah didn’t even blink. “So what if he knows? It’s not like he just found out today. What’s the worst he can do, bite me?”
She slipped her arm through Jackson’s, coaxing him gently back to his desk. Opening the bag she’d brought, she took out a box of pastries, put on a disposable glove and picked up a piece, holding it up to his mouth.
