After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 382

Deborah left The Lane Group feeling pretty pleased with herself after Jackson’s almost certain promise. As she stepped out of the elevator on the first floor, she nearly bumped into Jordan, who looked like he’d just come back from the workshops in the back of the headquarters. The building itself was all glass and steel in the front, rising eighteen stories above the street, but the real heart of the company was in those huge workshops behind it. The other factories were scattered among the various subsidiaries.

Jordan shot her a cold glare, but Deborah didn’t even blink. She walked out with her chin up, heels clicking across the floor. As she passed him, she tossed out, almost like an afterthought, “Jordan, your little brother really wants to live with you.”

Jordan’s voice was icy. “My mom only had me. I don’t have a brother.” He gave her a look full of contempt. “If some outsider thinks he can call me brother, he’s dreaming.”

Deborah didn’t let his words get to her. She gave a soft, dismissive laugh, brushed her hair back, and strode past him, her heels tapping out a rhythm that seemed to echo in Jordan’s ears long after she was gone. Every step sounded like a slap, each one reminding him he wasn’t an only child anymore. That changed the day that kid was born, ten years ago. Since then, he’d stopped being his father’s only son, and he hated it.

Still fuming, Jordan went back to his office and dialed Natalie. As soon as she picked up, he said, “Natalie, can you try talking to Cynthia again? She’s been part of this family for twenty years. I can’t believe she doesn’t care at all. Is she really going to just hand everything over to someone else?”

“Bring her a gift, be nice. Right now, she’s still on our side.”

“I will,” Natalie replied. “Did Ethan talk to your dad yet?”

“No, and honestly, we can’t rely on Ethan. He doesn’t see things the same way. Like you said, if Dad actually goes through with the divorce, Ethan will just help Cynthia get that three hundred million settlement.”
