Isabella didn’t turn down his offer. She slipped into the car and smiled. “It’s a wedding gift from Ethan. He bought me a house right here in this neighborhood, so I stayed over last night. I didn’t have my car with me.”
Harold just nodded. He already knew all about it. He knew every single wedding gift Ethan had given Isabella, right down to the last detail. In fact, he and Jesse were the ones who had helped Ethan put together the list. Ethan had begged them for help since he honestly had no clue what to get Isabella. He hadn’t really put his heart into it.
Both Harold and Jesse thought Ethan was out of line. If Ethan wanted their help, they figured they might as well make him spend big. They just wanted Isabella to get something decent for once. But no one else ever found out about that. Harold and Jesse kept it to themselves, and to this day, it was still their secret.
Once they were both in the car, Harold reached for a box of pastries he’d left on the dashboard and handed it to Isabella. “My housekeeper made these. They’re seriously good. I always bring a box or two to work.”
“Thank you, but I already ate breakfast. I don’t think I could eat another bite,” Isabella said politely, giving him a gentle smile.
She looked at him and asked, “Do you actually like pastries, Harold?”
He grinned. “I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed, but if they’re good, I’ll eat a few. Work gets so busy sometimes, I get hungry and just need something to keep me going. A pastry and a cup of tea do the trick.”
Isabella nodded, understanding.
“You should at least try them,” Harold insisted. “If you think they’re good, I can ask Barbara to bring some for you and Laura next time.”
She shook her head. “These are your snacks for work. If I eat them, you won’t have any left.”
“That’s fine. My morning’s not too crazy today, so I’ll get a proper lunch. No worries about me going hungry.”
