“The time she spent calling you, she could have just called her family doctor instead. You’re not a doctor. What can you really do for her? Even if you took her to the hospital, I doubt she’d actually go.”
The driver glanced at Ethan in the rearview mirror, his tone casual but honest.
“And you and Isabella fought last night. Shouldn’t you be trying to make things right with your wife? Instead, you let one call from Natalie pull you away. How do you think Isabella feels about that?”
Ethan stayed quiet for a long time. The silence felt heavy in the car. Finally, he spoke, his voice low. “Turn around. Let’s go back to the shop.”
The driver blinked in surprise, then gave a small, relieved smile. “Alright.”
At last, Ethan was coming to his senses.
After telling the driver to head back, Ethan took out his phone. He called Natalie’s brother, explained that she was sick, and mentioned that Jordan was out of town. He asked if someone from her family could go check on her.
“Natalie’s not feeling well? Okay, I’ll call my mom and have her go over,” her brother replied. He didn’t ask questions, just hung up and dialed Adelina right away.
Letting the Gates family know seemed to take a huge weight off Ethan’s shoulders.
When they got back to the shop, Laura barely glanced at him, making a face. Isabella didn’t even look up. Both of them were busy with their own things, acting like he wasn’t even there.
Ethan had never been ignored like this before. Part of him wanted to just walk out and never look back, but every time he reached the door, he hesitated, then wandered back in. He followed Isabella everywhere, sticking to her like glue.
No matter where she went, he was right behind her. If she started to do something, he’d step in and try to help, though he wasn’t much good at any of it. Didn’t matter, he just wanted to be close to her and show that he was trying.
Finally, Isabella lost her patience. “Ethan, do you not have anything better to do? Please, just leave me alone. You’re not helping, you’re making everything more complicated. Go take care of Natalie. People are always at their weakest when they’re sick.”
