He woke up with a pounding headache, the kind of hangover that made even the idea of going back to work laughable. Not that it mattered. He was still officially on honeymoon leave, and whether he showed up at the office or not, things would run just fine. Keith Charles, his right-hand man, could handle anything. Honestly, Ethan could disappear for a whole month and The Adams Group would keep humming along without a hitch.
Isabella Lane came home sooner than expected. After dropping Laura off, she headed straight back, carrying a bouquet of bright red roses and a department store shopping bag that held a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
She already knew Ethan wouldn’t care for either. Flowers didn’t impress him, and he didn’t have a sweet tooth. If these were from Natalie Gates, though, he would have devoured the chocolate with a smile, no matter how sugary. In the end, it was simple—Ethan didn’t love her. She was just a pawn, something to help him get closer to the woman he truly wanted.
“Ethan, I’m home,” Isabella called out as she breezed in, juggling the flowers and the shopping bag. She’d bought the chocolates on a whim, grabbing them as she passed through the store. No second thoughts. In her past life, she’d given him so many gifts, from the simple to the luxurious, and he never liked any of them. She wasn’t going to waste her energy or money again, not when it was so obviously pointless.
If he didn’t want the flowers, she could put them in a vase in her study and let them brighten the place up. If he turned his nose up at the chocolates, all the better—she could eat them herself. She loved Ferrero Rocher.
Ethan was sitting on the couch, his expression locked in a scowl, lips pressed tight. Anyone with eyes could tell he was a breath away from blowing up.
Isabella just grinned and walked over. She held out the bouquet, the deep red roses mixed with tiny white baby’s breath, looking absolutely stunning. “Ethan, these are for you. I hope your mood is as lovely as these flowers, every single day.”
