“I’m really not interested in all that,” Laura said. “Way too risky. I’d rather just write my novels. At least I’ve had a bestseller before. Sure, the online fiction world is tough these days, but I’m still riding the afterglow of my last big hit.”
“You’re not thinking about investing in restaurants, are you?” Isabella asked. “Things aren’t looking so hot right now. We probably shouldn’t throw money around.”
Isabella remembered how the next couple of years would only get tougher for every industry. “No, I’m not serious about it,” she said. “Just thinking out loud.”
The only thing she knew was really taking off right now was short-form series. She had already put money into that, and she’d just leased four storefronts to open a bookstore and coffee shop. She couldn’t blow all the ten million Ethan gave her to start her business. She needed to save some for cash flow. When the series was finished, she’d still have to pay for promotion and ads. That would eat up a lot, too.
The two of them finished lunch and kept chatting for a while. Laura had a habit of napping in the afternoon. Isabella decided to join her. Sometimes a good nap was all it took to turn a bad mood around.
When Isabella finally woke up, the sun was already going down. She’d slept through the whole afternoon.
She grabbed her phone, half out of habit. No missed calls. What was she hoping for? Oh, right. She’d blocked them all.
Laura was already fixing dinner.
Isabella shuffled out, a little embarrassed. “I can’t believe I slept this late.”
“Sleep is good for you,” Laura said. “Feeling better? Come eat. Then we can go shopping. Oh, that reader of mine said he picked up a bunch of fresh seafood for me on his way back. He should be here soon. After dinner, we’ll go downstairs to meet him. Once we grab the seafood, we can hit the mall. Shopping always cheers me up when I’m in a funk.”
Isabella laughed. “Yeah, but you always buy a ton of stuff you never use. It just piles up at home until you toss it all out.”
Laura shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. Shopping makes me happy. Besides, I don’t throw everything away. I sell some things online. At least I make a little money back.”
They had barely finished eating when Laura’s phone started ringing. It was the reader who’d been blowing up her messages all week.
