It’s a flurry of events after that. I get King and the warriors settled, making sure that they are comfortable.

By the time King is in his room, the tension in my chest has eased just a little. Not enough, but enough for me to breathe without feeling like my ribs are splintering.

I leave him unpacking and walk aimlessly without a destination in mind. My thoughts are a mess; my powers still hum wildly beneath my skin, and that aching warning still presses heavily on my heart

The moment I get downstairs, a high-pitched squeal explodes from the living room.

“Mommy!”

Aspen launches herself at me before I can brace, her tiny arms wrapping so tightly around my waist that she nearly knocks me over. I bend down and kiss her cheek.

“Hey, my love.”

She pulls back only to squish my face between her small hands. “You haven’t sleep with me for two days. Where were you? I dreamt you turned into a dragon, fly away and didn't take me with you.”

"It's 'slept and flew,' baby," I gently correct her.

Yesterday I also asked Martha to let Aspen sleep in her room. I was still high strung and I didn’t want to disturb her sleep with my constant turning, nor did I want her to notice something was wrong with me.

"Okay," she says. "But you still turned into a white dragon."

A breathy laugh escapes me. “A dragon? Really?”

She nods seriously. “You smell like outside. And power. And fire.” She sniffs me again. “But mostly fire.”

“I was training, baby.” I explain.

“With fire?”

“Yes.”

Hee eyes widen. “But you said fire is danger, and we shouldn’t play with it.”

“It’s ‘dangerous’… and that only applies to little troublemakers like you,” I answer, gently tapping your nose.

“So will I have powers like you, mommy?” she asks, her eyes hopeful.

It’s something that I’ve wondered about more times than I care to admit. The thought of what she’ll be scares me. Her dad is an alpha, and I’m an alpha female with powers I don’t understand or know where they come from, so what will she be?

“I don’t know, honey. We’ll just have to wait and see,” I tell her, even though a part of me knows that she will probably inherit my powers.
