Damon:
“I don’t understand how she managed to get inside the building towards Sienna’s office and why no one stopped her, Why security didn’t just stop her. What did she give them as an explanation and how did she find out where she was working? How did she find out where the building was?” I asked, snapping at Ethan.
No one had stopped her.
No one had questioned her presence.
She managed to enter the company, speak to my mate and no one spoke to her. No one asked who she was. Or maybe they did, maybe they were entranced. I did not understand. Nothing made sense.
I stood at the window of my office, fists clenched tight behind my back, watching the sky dim into hues of gold and crimson. My thoughts, however, were anything but calm. Hell, they were in some kind of storm that I did not even know how to explain.
She had touched Sienna with her words. I saw the shift in her. The slight distance in her smile. The shadow of unease in her eyes. The pain that she was actually trying to hide, the anger that was behind her gaze, the quietness, her rigid responses, her tense shoulders. I saw it all.
And it infuriated me.
“Get me everything,” I said, my voice low, tight with restrained rage. “Everything you can find on her. I don’t care if it takes all night. I want every single thing about her, who she is, where she came from, her childhood. I want to know if she uses the bathroom, I want to know where she uses it.”
Ethan stood near the desk, expression rigid. Carter leaned against the wall by the door, arms crossed, already tense. Both men understood when I was angry, and right now I was more than just angry, I was livid. That woman approached my mate and she did it without question. She did it without difficulty and the cold chill that Sienna felt, it did not make sense.
Ethan nodded. “You want just Delilah?”
“I want everything, Ethan,” I snapped. “Where she came from, what pack she belonged to, who raised her. Bloodlines. Territories. Alliances. Even the names of her goddamn midwives if you can find them. There’s something we’re missing. I feel it in my gut. This girl didn’t just stumble into our forest. There were no rogues and you know it. We chose to ignore that. We said maybe they ran away there. Are countless of things that we chose to give as an explanation. But I believe that I doubt that if there were rogues they would just leave her roaming around like that. Rogues do not trespass territories unless they want to die, and even when they do, they do it with courage. They do not run away.”
“We’ve searched,” Carter interjected. “Nothing comes up with her name or the scent profile we managed to collect.” “Then it’s fake. She’s hiding behind a mask. And I want it ripped off.” I said, glaring at him.
Ethan’s brows pulled together. “What about Sienna?”
My shoulders dropped just a little. “She’s shaken,” I said, softer. “But she’s alright. I made sure of that. She’s going to take a while to actually recover from the moment, but she’s going to eventually do it. She’s going to be alright. I’m going to make sure that she is. That woman cannot approach my mate again. If she dares do so, then someone is going to pay the price of it.”
And she was. On the surface. But I knew her too well to miss the cracks forming underneath.
“She hasn’t said much,” I added. “But I know she’s worried. And she should be. That’s what pisses me off the most. This pack was supposed to be her home. Her peace. And now she’s questioning every shadow again. And I don’t want her trying back. I don’t want her to hide simply because she’s afraid. I want her to be able to stand strong. And if that woman is going to cause a threat, then I’m going to eliminate it.”
I turned around, facing the two men who had stood by my side through every war, every battle, every goddamn betrayal.
“This isn’t over,” I said. “Whatever Delilah is doing, it’s just the beginning.”
Ethan gave a solemn nod. “We’ll find what you need. And when we do?”
I didn’t have to answer.
He already knew.
I just held her, burying my nose in her hair, breathing her in. The scent that grounded me. The scent that kept me sane. The scent that made my life feel whole.
“I just want to stay here for a while,” I said finally, voice barely above a whisper. “No titles. No threats. Just you, me … and her. Just our family for an hour. I just want that peace.”
She didn’t say anything.
She didn’t need to.
Her fingers laced through mine. Her head tilted slightly to press a kiss against my jaw.
And for a moment… just a moment…
There was peace.
But I knew it wouldn’t last.
And I was going to make damn sure that whoever tried to steal it from us again would regret ever walking into my territory.
