Damon:
I didn’t expect to see her walk through the door.
Even when I called her sounds, considering the fact that Sienna did not come and report to me, I expected it to be a mistake. I expected that something else was going on, that maybe she was just roaming around.
But when I saw her walking through the door, when I saw my woman and my mate with her now, this was something that I knew was not what I expected to see today.
And when I saw the look in her eyes, I realized that I understood that something was going on, something was terribly wrong.
Delilah stood like she belonged, but there was something different now, her posture rigid, her gaze sharper than before. She didn’t carry herself with the same arrogance she usually wore like a second skin. This time… it was calculation. Her left arm was wrapped around herself, as if she was using it to compose herself, to hold herself together.
And the woman beside her, my Luna, my mate, looked just as resolute. She looked to be completely lost, as if she was thinking about so many things at once and yet could not find the answer for neither one of them.
Sienna’s hand brushed mine as she passed me, a silent signal to let her speak before I exploded the way I wanted to. Before I got to snap out her and tell her off, kick her out of the office before she even entered.
“Don’t ask,” she said before I could get a word out. “Just listen. I wouldn’t have brought her here myself if there was nothing that you needed to hear.”
That alone almost broke me.
She sat. Delilah followed. Ethan and Carter shifted awkwardly near the door, caught between curiosity and caution.
Delilah folded her hands. “You hate me. I know. You don’t trust me. That’s smart. You’ve seen through every card I’ve tried to play. And I wouldn’t be here if I did not need to be. I would have been anywhere else.”
“Then why are you here?” I asked flatly. “I doubt that there is anything that I can do to serve you. There is nothing that you are going to need from me.”
“Because the game changed.” She said, taking a breath. “If I tell you that I need a lot more from you than you might realize, you might not believe me, but that is the truth. I need your help, that is why I’m here.”
I looked at Sienna. She gave a small nod. I studied her expression for a moment before turning my attention to Delilah.
“I’m not asking for forgiveness,” Delilah continued. “I’m not even asking for trust. I’m asking for an alliance. A temporary one. I don’t have another choice and I need this.”
I laughed once, bitter. “Do you really think that asking me for anything after the games that you’ve tried to play is going to do you any good? Do you really believe that I’m going to give you a chance to even listen?”
“I didn’t say it would be easy,” she said, lifting her chin. “But I’m not the only one you hate. Giovanni is still breathing. Still planning. And you know he won’t stop until he breaks everything you love. He will not stop until he does everything in his power to ruin whatever. Good. There is in this world whatever peace that everyone has managed to create.”
I tensed.
“You want him gone,” she said, “so do I.”
The room stayed silent, thick with the scent of adrenaline and tension.
I opened my mouth to speak when…
Crack.
A single gunshot split the air like a blade.
I frowned, and for a moment everything just seemed to still down. I looked at my mate, who was already on her feet before wrapping my hand around her wrist, stopping her.
“You’re going to stay here. I’m going to go and check what’s happening.” I said, looking her dead in the eye. “And be sure to stay away from the window.”
“Damon…”
“I don’t care what you’re going to say right now, if they’re starting to make their move, then I do not want you to get caught in it. Do you understand me, Sienna…?”
