Nikolai:
The silence in the estate was deceptive.
Anyone that passed would have said that this was the most peaceful estate around, that there were no troubles lurking about. The servants walked around, tending to their duties. No one spoke. No one dared look up. The girls were in their chambers. I assumed they were afraid to leave. Technically, Lysandra’s state was known. She had lost her mind completely. Unless she is able to recover from the madness that he put her in. And Delilah knew that she was playing with fire. She had triggered him, and now she needed to fear for her life.
I was the one sent to complete the sentence that he threw on her. I was the one sent to make sure that you broke, that she died, but she lost all hope that she saw her pain in front of her. I was sent to show her that she had not only failed her mother, but that she also failed everything that she grew to become. Giovanni did not understand was how wrong he was. Should not fail her mother. She was everything that her mother would have wished she was.
I walked through the hallway with a gun tucked under my coat and war settling into my bones. Everything about all that I have lived with, all the lies, all the games, the blood, the treason, everything just played in my mind.
I knew that I did bad things in my life. I knew that I hurt many people, but I did not think that I would end up putting a man’s daughter to the stake, the man that I lived with, the man that I fought by his side.
Delilah’s door was ajar. The guards were gone, Giovanni had reassigned them, likely preparing for whatever stunt he planned next. He thought he still had control over every thread in this house, every person under his roof. He thought I was one of them. I used to be. But now I knew better than to think that I would submit your man like him, a man who has lost himself so much to power that he was willing to give upon his own children.
I stepped inside without knocking. She was sitting by the window, her arms folded tightly around herself. When she turned to see me, her eyes flashed with something between suspicion and exhaustion.
“Nikolai?” She asked warily, standing. “What are you doing here? You are the last person that I would have expected in my chambers this evening. Did something happen to Lysandra?”
“Your sister is well, for now.”
I pulled the gun from my coat and held it out to her by the grip.
She didn’t reach for it.
“What is this?” She asked. “Since when do you walk inside my room with a gun?”
“This is a chance.” I said, looking her in the eye.
She stared at me, unmoving.
“You run,” I continued. “You take your sister. You leave this place and don’t look back. You do it now, or you won’t get another chance. I’m giving you this chance when I know what is the cost of it. But you staying here is going to be a lot more dangerous as time goes.”
“Why are you helping me?” Her voice trembled, not with fear, but confusion. “You’ve stood beside him. You’ve done nothing all this time. Why now? Is this some kind of trap? Are you trying to lure me out before you’ve killed me? Is that what he wants?”
I picked up the gun again and pressed it into her palm.
“Go now. Find the Lockwood Alpha. Find safety. But don’t wait too long.” I said, giving her a gentle smile. “They will be waiting for you, that sister of yours, even if you don’t want to consider her as one, has a good heart in her. And I know for a fact that they are going to be waiting and they’re going to keep you both safe.”
“What about you?” She asked, clearing her throat. “He’s going to have your life. If you stay here, he’s going to end up killing you.”
I walked toward the door, resting my hand on the handle.
“There’s one last thing I need to settle. And then… Giovanni will finally learn what it means to bleed.” I said, the on my face, reaching my eyes. “I have long lost the fear of death. And if it is my time, then I’m more than welcome to it. But first, he needs to pay the price of what he’s done. Even if it happens mentally.”
I looked back at her one last time.
“Make sure your sister survives. And make sure he watches her become the woman he never thought she could be.”
