Damon:
I stepped outside, the chill biting deeper than it had in days. It wasn’t simply cold, it was an unnatural coldness, a sinister darkness hovering at the edge of every shadow. Everything just seemed to be different and no matter how much I tried to stay calm about it, I knew that even the pack members were noticing. And it was not only the pack, it was as if nature itself was telling me that there was something wrong.
I rubbed my hands together, attempting to shake off the strange sensation that crawled up my spine. A sensation that was both cruel and dark, One that I did not understand, One that I knew only appeared when something really bad was going on. Something that defied nature itself.
“Alpha,” Ethan’s voice came from behind me, strained and uneasy. “There’s something wrong.”
“I did not need you to tell me that to know, Ethan.” I said without turning to face him. But when he did not come up with a smart remark, I frowned.
I turned to face them, I saw him standing with Carter and Jared, their faces pale, worry lining their features. They shifted restlessly, glancing toward the tree line as if they half-expected something to emerge from it at any moment.
Jared was one of my allies, but for him to be here and announced was not normal. It told me that something was going on. It told me that something beyond our comprehension and beyond our control was happening.
“What is it?” I asked sharply, already sensing something had gone terribly wrong.
Jared stepped forward, his voice low, grim. “Something’s happening. The wolves…they feel it. I tried to calm them down but it is almost impossible to do so. There’s an unease running through everyone, like…like a sudden darkness fell over us. No one can pinpoint why, but they feel it. The birds can feel it too, and it is as if everything of nature seems to have fled. They’re trying to run away from it, but whatever it is, I do not know.”
“Follow me,” I ordered sharply, already moving swiftly towards the forest. “Something’s wrong.”
Ethan and Carter fell into step immediately behind me, their movements tense and cautious.
The scent hit me before I could clearly identify it, a sickeningly sweet, metallic smell of blood, intertwined with an unfamiliar darkness. My heart tightened painfully. My wolf growled but then whimpered and then grew protective.
