Delilah:
The second my shoes touched solid ground, the noise of celebration hit me like a wave. Everything seemed to just clear out. It was as if there was no war at all. Well, aside from those that died.
Laughter. Cheers. A wolf howling in triumph somewhere behind the courtyard. The scent of blood still lingered, but it was layered now with smoke… and victory.
The fear that was within the pack seemed to disappear completely and it was as if things were back to the way that it should be. But I knew that this was not it. She was not done. I saw it in her eyes, and the way that she lingered about, the way that she looked at me. She had other plans, and they were darker, more cruel, more intense. I just did not know what they were. Why she had brought me to her was beyond my understanding, but I also understood that. There was a sign of something. She was giving me a hint. She was trying to get me to follow her path.
Before I could even steady my breath, Ethan was in front of me, bruised, bloody, one arm clearly hanging wrong, but smiling. I should have been smiling. I should have been happy to see him alive. I was. But I just did not know what was waiting for us. I did not understand how I was going to be able to tell him anything, how I was going to be able to tell anyone what happened.
“You’re back,” he breathed, voice hoarse. “Are you okay? Did anyone hurt you? What happened?”
“You’re hurt.” I blinked, trying to understand what was going on as I looked at him. I did not answer his questions, mostly because I did not have an answer to them. Right now I did not even know how I was going to be able to stand.
“I’ll live.” He pulled me into a tight embrace, ignoring the wince that followed. “Don’t ever disappear like that again. Don’t you give yourself to the mist like that? What if something had happened to you? What if you died, Delilah? She took you and you just walked to her willingly. You just went to her. How can you do that?”
I wanted to answer, but the moment was too heavy. Instead, I let my forehead rest against his shoulder. His heart was beating too fast. He wrapped his arm around me. His touched gentle despite him being bloody, despite the injuries that he had.
Around us, the pack celebrated. Warriors were laughing, hugging, some dropping to their knees in disbelief. I couldn’t blame them. What happened was beyond explanation. They were scared. Most of them did not even think that they would live through this. And yet here we were, alive.
“That was insane,” one of them muttered nearby. “I thought we were gone. I thought that was it. I thought that we would not make it out of it. It was impossible for us to actually think about something like this, and yet here we are.”
“I saw Luna Sienna take out two wolves with a fire poker. A fire poker,” another said in awe. “I could swear that everything was going to end, but when I saw her, we were forced to fight her, challenged her power, The way that she stood, it just brought us more strength.
“I saw Alpha Damon shift mid-air and slam one of those bastards into the wall. He didn’t even pause.” His friend said, looking at him. “I don’t know what we would have done if not for them. I think that we would have ended like the other packs. We would have been entrance. They encouraged us to stand strong.”
“I thought Carter was going to kill me,” someone whispered, voice shaking. “But then he just… stopped. He just stopped completely.”
The mention of Carter snapped me out of it.
Sienna had stepped outside the house. Her clothes were torn, hair pulled back, face smeared with soot, but her expression lit up the moment she saw Damon.
He walked straight to her, not caring that his arms were bloodied, that he was limping. He pulled her into him, and she melted into his chest like it was the only place she could breathe.
He kissed her forehead, letting his lips linger there before she stood on her toes, kissing him. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer to him, deepening the kiss before the two of them pulled away.
Ethan touched my face. “What happened to you? You’re quiet and then you just suddenly disappeared and now you’re not saying anything about it. You look weak and dazed as well.”
Carter’s trance.
The cheers.
The smoke.
The feeling that something had been broken inside Tatiana, and that she was going to come for me next. That she was willing to do whatever it took for her to destroy everything that was in in front of her, everything that was in her path. She was not going to stop. I saw it in her eyes.
“Delilah?” Ethan said again. My eyes started rolling to the back of my head and even balancing. Had it not been him holding me in his arms, I wouldn’t have been able to stand.
“I… I don’t think it’s over,” I whispered, swaying on my feet. “The celebration, it’s not over. It’s too early for us to be celebrating.”
“What… Delilah!”
The world went black.
