Damon:
I didn’t go back to the main house right away.
I couldn’t. Not after what I saw. Not after what I saw him go through, the struggle, the pain, his screaming, it just played in my mind.
I stayed there, just outside the cell, watching Carter as he finally fell into a quiet sleep. His breathing had evened out, but I could still see the faint tremor in his hands. I could still see the fear that I saw in his eyes, the anger and the anguish, the way he begged for help.
He wasn’t faking.
No matter how hard a person could fake, they wouldn’t be able to get this. He was terrified.
Whatever had its claws in him, it wasn’t gone. Not completely. And I knew that she wasn’t going to stop, not until she got what she wanted, whatever that was at least.
I ran a hand through my hair, then turned and headed to the house. The sky was quiet now. The mist had retreated, but that didn’t mean we were safe. That didn’t mean that anything of the danger that we were going through was gone. If anything, it was just the beginning of it, all of it.
The peace only meant that we were being watched. It only meant that she was gathering her strength, wherever that was. And I knew that it was only a matter of time before she acted again, before she went again to talk.
Sienna was in the hallway, Isla cradled against her chest, fast asleep. When she saw me, her face softened, but it didn’t erase the worry in her eyes. I could tell that she saw the anger in my eyes. She saw the pain in them too. If anyone could read me, I was her.
“You look like you saw a ghost,” she said gently. “Do you want to tell me what’s going on?”
I stopped in front of her. I didn’t want to wake the baby, but I had to tell her. I needed this to get out of my chest and I knew that she was also understanding that this was her mother. It hurts her to know that this was her mother and that she was doing this.
“It’s Carter,” I said. “He… he showed me. Everything that happened to him, the way that she was treating him, the way that she’s still fighting to treat him, he showed it all to me. He’s petrified, Sienna.”
Her brows drew together.
“Tatiana?” She whispered. “What’s going on?”
I nodded. “She’s not done. She’s in his head, still. Even now. He’s fighting for control, he’s trying to stand, but he’s not going to be able to do it alone. Doing his best, but it’s not going to be easy.”
Sienna’s lips parted, a flicker of horror flashing across her face.
“Damon…”
“She made him watch. She made him sit back, paralyzed, unable to control whatever it was they had in his mind. He wanted to move, he wanted to fight, but he couldn’t. It was like a movie playing in his mind. No matter how hard he tried to control it, it’s just tightened around his neck. He couldn’t do anything about it. He fought back, but he’s still trapped somewhere in it. If I hadn’t gotten there when I did…”
I didn’t finish the thought.
Sienna moved to her quickly. “You shouldn’t be out of bed. You still need to rest and recover Lysandra.”
“I’m fine. If we’re going to go by definitions of who needs to rest, you need to rest as well. But we don’t talk about that. We’ve all been through this for and we are all going to need to rest together or we’re going to need to recover together. It’s not a one way thing.” Lysandra said, brushing her off. “I heard you talking. I know I’m not part of everything, not really. But I know her. I know what she does. I know what she takes. And I know what she’s willing to take, how she’s willing to take it, the control that she’s willing to have.”
I looked at her, really looked.
She wasn’t broken anymore. She was scarred, but standing.
“She tried to take me,” Lysandra continued. “But Delilah stopped her. She gave me back my mind. We can do that to Carter.” Her eyes flicked to Sienna.
“It’s going to hurt, but we can do it to him. He’s going to need to recover. There is what is called a mind control bond. If that breaks then she’s never going to be able to get into his mind again.” She said, and I frowned.
“Are you sure that we are going to be able to do it?”
“I didn’t sit on that bed for nothing for weeks. I was recovering. I was fighting back. My body was weak because I was fighting. If he wants to, he can fight too. But he has to want to fight, it’s not an option. Otherwise, she’s going to consume him. And if she does that then there’s no going back.” She said, taking a step back. “And though painful. I am willing to help. If anything, I’m the one who knows how it feels.”
