The metal snapped under the pressure of my claws.
Carter let out a low, panicked breath. “Don’t. Please. She’ll come back. She’ll hurt you…’
“She already has,” I said softly. “But this time, I’m ready. This time I’m going to fight back and I want to challenge her using her own game.”
I met his eyes, wide, frantic, terrified. “I need you to trust me, Carter. I know what I’m doing, okay?”
“What are you going to do?” He whispered, and I smiled.
“When she crawls in,” I said, “you’re going to feel like you’re suffocating. Like something’s tearing through your skin. But you need to keep breathing. You hear me? You’re going to keep your eyes on mine. You’re going to keep fighting her until she’s not going to be able to get inside your head again.”
He nodded, barely.
I pressed my forehead to his. “Breathe through the fear. Count with me if you have to. In and out. Stay here. I need you to stay with me, please.”
I stood, turned toward the room, and said clearly, “I’m calling her. And I don’t want anyone interfering. I don’t care what you’re going to think about this, but I’m not going to stop until we’ve been able to get him free of all of this. And if anyone does not like it, the door is right behind you. You can just walk away.”
Damon moved, but Sienna caught his arm. “Let her,” she said. “She’s not the same girl anymore. She can’t fight back. She knows what she’s doing.”
The room seemed to hold its breath as I tilted my head back and whispered, “Tatiana…”
The mist began to seep in from the corners.
“Tatiana,” I called again, louder. “If you want power, come get it. Come through me. Try and kill me. I dare you. You tried to do it before, it seemed to have disappointed you and you couldn’t. How about you try again?”
The temperature dropped.
Carter whimpered beside me. “She’s here…”
I nodded, never looking away from the shadows gathering.
“She’s going to try and break you,” I told him. “But before that, she’ll try to break me. Let her come. Let her try. It’s going to hurt and you’re going to fight. I’m going to push you away as much as I can, but you are going to need to stay with me. You’re going to need to focus on my voice, on me, Carter, not on her.”
Suddenly, Carter lunged, eyes glazed over, face twisted in pain and confusion. He grabbed me by the throat, shoving me back hard against the wall.
His body convulsed. The mist shrieked.
I felt her scream inside him. I felt her rage.
But I did not back down.
I would not back down.
The Luna I had been was gone.
This, this was who I was meant to be.
And I was going to burn her shadow to the ground.
“Now show me what you’ve got,” I whispered. “That’s if you have anything left in you, Tatiana…”
