“When you found out you were pregnant,” he clarified, his voice low. “What was your plan? You were already away from the pack for a while, but I am curious about what you aimed to do.”
I swallowed, gripping my arms tightly. “I didn’t have one. I didn’t think of a plan.”
Damon scoffed. “Of course, you didn’t.”
I turned to him, narrowing my eyes. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
His gaze locked onto mine, hard and unwavering. “It means that you weren’t thinking, Sienna. You were carrying my child, and instead of coming to me, you ran.”
For a moment, I studied his expression, debating on whether or not he was being serious. But when I saw his tight jaw, when I saw his anger, when I read his tone, I realized that he was actually being serious.
His jaw ticked. “You ran with no plan, knowing damn well you wouldn’t be able to protect yourself, let alone her.”
Anger flared inside me, but before I could snap back, Damon took a step closer.
“I don’t care if you hate me,” he said, his voice dropping to a near growl. “I don’t care if you never wanted me to know. But the fact that you were willing to risk yourself, to risk her, just to keep me out of the picture…” He exhaled sharply, his fists clenching at his sides. “That’s why I was angry. That’s why I couldn’t find it in myself to accept you as a person when you came back to the pack. I couldn’t respect you the same way that I did before.”
“Respect goes a long way, Damon. You chose to break that respect when you played me like some kind of fool.” I said, and he hummed in response.
“That still does not give you the right to run away with my daughter as if I was nothing in her life. As if I would have been nothing in her life.”
“You would have asked me to abort her.”
“You’re being too confident by thinking. That tells me that you don’t know much about me, at least not as much as you think you do.” He said, looking away from me.
I opened my mouth, wanting to argue, to tell him he had no right to be mad when he was the one who had thrown me aside first.
But I couldn’t.
Because, deep down, I knew there was truth in his words.
I blinked. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “If you’re going to stay here, if you’re going to be Isla’s mother, then you need to be strong enough to protect her. To protect yourself.”
I scoffed. “And you think you’re the best person to teach me?”
His smirk returned, a dark glint in his eyes. “I know I am. I don’t need to think about it.”
I stared at him, trying to find some way to refuse, some way to push him away again.
But I knew, deep down, that he was right.
And that scared me more than anything.
