Alpha Damon (Sienna) novel Chapter 65

Sienna:

I sat at the small wooden desk in my room, my fingers hovering over the trackpad of my laptop. A list of job postings filled the screen, each one a potential escape, a chance to regain some of the independence I had lost. Each one of them was making me more determined to work hard to get what I needed. If I was just going to sit back here, I was just going to end up being thrown out and I could not risk that for myself or my daughter.

I had barely been surviving before Isla was born, juggling university and work just to make ends meet. Now, things were different. I had a daughter to think about.

University could wait until she grew older. He was not going to run away, but I knew that I needed to work.

I couldn’t rely on the pack forever.

Not after the way Evelyn had treated me. Not after I saw her hate in her eyes. Damon did not even want me here. It was only a matter of time before I was cast out.

I was not going to drag her down with me. I was going to pull her up. I was going to be the mother that she deserved.

I couldn’t do that to her.

Letting out a slow breath, I scrolled through the listings, my eyes scanning through the details. I wasn’t delusional, I knew that finding a job while being a single mother and living under the same roof as Damon wouldn’t be easy. But I had to try.

I had to do everything that I could to make sure that this worked.

The soft ping of my phone broke the silence, making my heart jump.

Unknown Number.

I hesitated for only a second before answering.

“Hello?”

“Miss Sienna De Luca?” a woman’s voice asked on the other end.

“Yes, this is she.” I said, looking down on my daughter has a small smile formed on my face.

“This is HR from Wellington & Co. You applied for a secretary position earlier this week, correct?”

My heart skipped a beat. I did.

“Yes, I did,” I answered, trying to keep my voice steady.

“We’d like to schedule an interview with you. Would you be available today at two in the afternoon?” She asked calmly, making my eyes widen in surprise. This was not something that I expected. The last job that I worked on was nothing more than me being a waitress for me to get a job as a secretary. This was not something that I expected. It was just a lucky click. I did not expect it to lead anywhere.

Excitement and nerves warred in my stomach. “Yes! I… I mean, yes, I’d be available.”

“Perfect. We’ll see you then. Check your email for the details.”

The call ended, and I stared at my phone, disbelief washing over me.

I got an interview.

I was actually doing something for myself again.

I closed my laptop, quickly making my way to Isla’s crib. She was asleep, her tiny fingers curled into fists, her breathing steady.

I reached out, brushing my fingers against her soft cheek.

“I’ll make sure you have everything you need, little one,” I whispered. “No matter what. Your mother’s always going to be by your side.”

“Please just keep an eye on her,” I said, adjusting my coat. “She should be fine until I get back. She’s already been fed but I also pumped a few bottles that are inside the fridge if she needs anything.”

The maid gave me a hesitant look, but before she could say anything, a deep, commanding voice cut through the air. “Where are you going?”

I froze.

His jaw clenched. “That’s not…”

“And what about Isla?” I pushed. “You expect me to sit here and rely on you and your family forever? I won’t do that. I won’t risk being left with nothing. I won’t leave my daughter at your mercy. I won’t leave her to whatever fate you have to draw for her.”

His nostrils flared, his hands balling into fists at his sides.

“I’ll provide for both of you,” he said through gritted teeth. “That is something that is out of the question. You don’t need a job and you’re not going to get a job. You are the mother of the alpha’s child.”

“I don’t want your provision, Damon,” I snapped. “I want control over my life. And being her mother is the main reason why I’m going to do this.”

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Tension crackled between us like lightning.

I could see it in his eyes, the battle waging within him. He didn’t like this. He didn’t like me pushing back.

But I wasn’t that weak, desperate girl anymore.

I met his gaze head-on. “I’m going to that interview, whether you like it or not.”

Damon exhaled sharply, his jaw tightening.

But he didn’t stop me when I turned and walked past him.

Because deep down, he knew…

He had already lost this fight.
