(Audrey’s POV)
“Hold still,” Sarah ordered, wielding a tube of bright red lip gloss with the precision of a warrior preparing for battle.
I sat obediently on the edge of my bed while she applied the finishing touch to my appearance. The bold color was a stark contrast to the neutral tones I usually wore around Arthur.
“There,” she said, stepping back to admire her handiwork. “Perfect. Nothing says ‘I’m over you’ like red lips and confidence.”
I glanced in the mirror, barely recognizing the woman who stared back. With my hair styled in loose waves, minimal but striking makeup, and a fitted black dress that hugged my curves, I looked nothing like the submissive Luna I’d been for years.
“You think it’s too much?” I asked, suddenly nervous about the mate bond severance meeting.
Sarah scoffed. “Absolutely not. Wear your battle armor, girl.” She gave me a playful wink. “Make him regret losing you, even if you don’t want him back.”
A flutter of anxiety rippled through my stomach. This was it-the day I’d been waiting for. The day I would finally sever my mate bond with Arthur Moonstone. Freedom was within my grasp.
“You’re right,” I said, straightening my shoulders. “This is what I’ve wanted for months.”
Grace, my wolf, stirred restlessly within me. While she understood the necessity of our separation from Arthur, the prospect of severing a mate bond was instinctively distressing to her primal nature.
“Remember,” Sarah said as I grabbed my purse, “this isn’t an ending. It’s a beginning.”
With those words of encouragement ringing in my ears, I headed to the Pack Council Office, arriving precisely at 1:45 PM-fifteen minutes early for our scheduled appointment.
The sterile waiting room was empty except for a Beta receptionist who nodded respectfully. “Luna Moonstone,” she greeted me. “Alpha King Moonstone hasn’t arrived yet.”
Of course he hadn’t. Even for our mate bond severance, Arthur couldn’t be bothered to arrive on time.
I took a seat, crossing my legs and trying to appear calm despite my racing heart. My phone buzzed with a text from Sarah: “Good luck! Freedom awaits! ?”
A small smile tugged at my lips. At least I had one person solidly in my corner.
Ten minutes after our scheduled appointment time, the distinctive purr of a Maybach engine announced Arthur’s arrival. I steeled myself, reminding my wolf that her instinctive response to her mate was no longer something to be heeded.
The doors swung open, and Arthur strode in, his Alpha presence immediately filling the room. He wasn’t alone-Victoria and Katherine followed closely behind him, their expressions a mix of triumph and barely concealed disdain.
My heart sank at the sight of them. Of course he’d bring his support network to witness my humiliation. I should have expected nothing less.
Arthur’s cold eyes swept over me, lingering briefly on my red lips before his face hardened.
“Let’s get this over with,” he said curtly. “I have other matters to attend to today.”
I arched an eyebrow. “Eager to get both a severance certificate and marking rights with Victoria in the same day?”
Victoria bristled visibly, while Katherine placed a restraining hand on her daughter’s arm.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You’ve developed quite a sharp tongue recently, Audrey.”
“Amazing what happens when you stop being in love with someone,” I replied, surprised by my own boldness.
Something flickered across Arthur’s face-surprise, perhaps, or even hurt. “Is that so?” His voice was dangerously soft. “You feel nothing for me anymore?”
Grace whined anxiously within me, sensing the tension. I avoided his probing gaze.
“We should proceed,” I said instead of answering his question. “The official is waiting.”
A senior Beta official in formal pack attire ushered us into a private office. His deferential manner toward Arthur was immediately apparent.
“Alpha King Moonstone,” he greeted with a slight bow. “We’re honored by your presence. I’ll personally expedite this process for you.”
I bit back a sarcastic comment about pack hierarchy privileges. What mattered was getting this done, not how unfair the preferential treatment was.
The Beta laid out the documents-formal declarations of mutual consent to sever, statements of asset division, and the actual severance certificate that would need to be filed with the North American Wolf Registry.
“As requested, we’ve prepared everything according to standard protocols,” the Beta explained. “Once signed and witnessed, the severance will be officially recognized across all allied territories.”
Arthur signed first, his pen scratching across the paper with decisive strokes. When he handed the pen to me, our fingers brushed briefly, sending an unwelcome jolt through my system.
Grace howled mournfully within me as I positioned the pen above the signature line. This was it-the moment I’d been working toward for months. One signature and I would be free.
Just as the pen touched paper, Arthur’s phone rang. His expression shifted from annoyance to tension as he answered it.
“What?” His voice was sharp. “When?” A pause. “How widespread?” Another pause, longer this time. “I’ll handle it.”
“That’s not fair!” I protested. “I’ve fulfilled all the requirements. We’ve been living separately for over two years! According to pack law, I can petition for severance based on extended separation alone.”
Arthur’s lip curled slightly. “Try it. I’ll contest every petition. You’ll be tied up in Pack Council hearings for years.”
It was a threat, pure and simple, and we both knew it. With his status as Alpha King, he could indeed make the process excruciating.
“You can’t keep me bound to you forever,” I said, my voice low but steady.
“Watch me,” he replied, turning to leave. “Daniel will escort you home. Don’t try anything foolish in the meantime.”
I felt my cheeks burn with anger and humiliation. “This isn’t over, Arthur. You know I’m not responsible for that leak.”
He paused at the door, his back to me. For a moment, I thought he might reconsider, but then his shoulders straightened.
“I know only that my mate once again finds herself at the center of a pack scandal,” he said coldly. “Perhaps you should reflect on why that keeps happening.”
With that parting shot, he strode out, leaving me standing amid the scattered severance papers. The Beta official awkwardly gathered the documents, avoiding my gaze.
“I’m sorry, Luna,” he murmured. “Perhaps another time.”
I barely heard him, my mind racing to understand who could have leaked the video. If not Florian, then who? And why now, of all moments?
Victoria and Katherine approached me together after Arthur had departed. They hadn’t followed him out, which surprised me.
“What were you arguing about?” Victoria asked, her eyes glinting with malice despite her confusion. “Arthur seemed quite upset.”
Katherine’s expression was more measured, though equally curious. “May we see the mate bond severance certificate?” she asked, apparently unaware that we hadn’t completed the process.
I looked at them both, a strange mixture of pity and satisfaction stirring within me as I contemplated whether to be the one to deliver the devastating news.
Victoria hadn’t seen her phone yet. Katherine was still blissfully ignorant of her daughter’s affair with Richard and the public humiliation spreading through the pack forums like wildfire.
How quickly the tables had turned.
