(Audrey’s POV)
Katherine stared at the video playing on her phone. The Pack Council Office had become eerily quiet. Even the Beta official who had been processing our mate bond severance papers had retreated to a far corner, pretending to organize documents while obviously eavesdropping on the unfolding drama.
Katherine’s hands trembled violently as she finally looked up from her phone. The devastation in her eyes quickly hardened into something far more dangerous – pure, unfiltered rage. Her wolf presence, which had always been carefully controlled, now flared wildly around her.
“You,” she snarled, turning on Victoria with such ferocity that her daughter took a step back. “How could you?”
Victoria’s eyes widened with fear. “Mother, I can explain-“
The sound of Katherine’s palm connecting with Victoria’s cheek echoed through the office. I winced despite myself. The slap was so forceful that Victoria stumbled sideways, clutching her face.
“Explain?” Katherine hissed, her wolf claws partially extending as her control slipped. “Explain how you’re rutting with my mate like a common rogue bitch?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears, whether from pain or the realization that she’d been caught, I couldn’t tell. “He forced me,” she whimpered, her voice small and childlike. “I didn’t want to, Mother. You have to believe me.”
Katherine laughed, a hollow, bitter sound that sent chills down my spine. “Forced you? I saw the video, Victoria. I heard you begging him for more.”
She grabbed Victoria’s chin roughly, forcing her to look up. “My own daughter. My own flesh and blood.”
Victoria’s facade cracked completely. Her shoulders slumped as she gave up the pretense. “Mother, please,” she begged, her wolf whimpering beneath her skin. “Remember who I am. I’m your daughter.”
That plea seemed to enrage Katherine further. She slapped Victoria again, harder this time.
“My daughter?” she screamed, her composure completely shattered. “My daughter wouldn’t spread her legs for my mate!”
I backed away slowly, feeling like an intruder in this intensely private meltdown. But Katherine and Victoria were too consumed by their confrontation to notice my retreat.
“You rogue bitch!” Katherine spat, hitting Victoria again and again, her partial claws leaving red marks on her daughter’s perfect cheeks. “That’s my mate you were with! Mine!”
Victoria finally snapped. Her eyes flashed gold as she pushed her mother away with surprising strength. “And you’re such a perfect example of loyalty?” she shot back, her voice dripping with venom.
Katherine froze mid-motion, her hand still raised to strike.
“What did you say to me?”
Victoria straightened, her fear giving way to defiance. “You heard me. Don’t pretend to be so righteous, Mother. Everyone knows you’re a pack-breaker yourself.”
Katherine’s face drained of color. “How dare you-“
“You stole Richard from his mate!” Victoria accused, her voice rising. “You pushed Arthur’s mother down those stairs, and you think you can judge me?”
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. I’d suspected Katherine was involved in Arthur’s mother’s death, but hearing Victoria confirm it sent a wave of nausea through me.
Katherine recovered quickly, her momentary shock replaced by renewed fury. “That was different! I did what I had to do for us to survive!”
“And so did I!” Victoria screamed back. “What’s the difference? You taught me everything I know about survival in this pack!”
The argument escalated rapidly, both women abandoning any pretense of dignity. Their wolves bristled visibly beneath their skins as they hurled increasingly vicious accusations at each other.
“I should have smothered you in your crib!” Katherine shrieked, her face contorted with rage. “I gave up everything for you! My freedom, my dignity, all to give you a place in a powerful pack!”
Victoria’s laugh was cruel and mocking. “And look how well that turned out for both of us. Now we’re both pack outcasts, thanks to your brilliant planning.”
She stalked around Katherine like a predator, no longer the submissive daughter. “You’re just angry because Richard finally chose someone younger and more beautiful. You’re old news, Mother. Past your prime.”
Katherine lunged at Victoria, her wolf claws fully extended now. “You ungrateful little bitch! After everything I’ve done for you!”
Victoria sidestepped and shoved Katherine hard. The older woman lost her balance and fell to the floor, her elegant dress billowing around her. The fall seemed to knock the fight out of her.
“My own daughter,” Katherine whispered, staring up at Victoria with disbelief. “I gave you everything. I showered you with love, with pack privileges, with the best of everything.”
Victoria stood over her, unmoved by her mother’s distress. “If that’s true loyalty, Mother, we wouldn’t be here now, would we?”
“You evil genius!” she exclaimed the moment I walked through the door. “The pack forums are on fire! Everyone’s talking about Richard and Victoria!”
I dropped my purse on the coffee table and collapsed into an armchair. “I didn’t leak the video, Sarah.”
She sat up, surprise written across her face. “Wait, seriously? Then who did?”
“I have my suspicions,” I sighed, thinking of Florian Stormhowl’s knowing smirk. “But I can’t prove anything.”
“Well, whoever did it has my eternal gratitude,” Sarah declared, returning her attention to her phone. “Victoria’s been knocked off her high horse in spectacular fashion. Listen to this comment: ‘Always knew something was off with that bitch. No wonder she couldn’t keep Arthur interested.'”
Despite my fatigue, I couldn’t help but smile at Sarah’s enthusiasm. “The timing couldn’t have been worse, though.”
Sarah looked up, her brow furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean? This is perfect timing!”
I shook my head. “The leak happened right as Arthur and I were about to finalize our mate bond severance. He immediately called it off, assuming I was behind the leak.”
“Oh shit,” Sarah breathed, the implications sinking in. “So you’re still..?”
“Still his mate, yes,” I confirmed grimly. “And now he’s furious with me, convinced I betrayed him by exposing his father’s affair with Victoria.”
Sarah set down her phone, her earlier excitement dimming. “But you weren’t responsible. Can’t you just explain that to him?”
I laughed bitterly. “Arthur Moonstone, listen to reason? That would be a first.”
She reached over and squeezed my hand sympathetically. “What will you do now?”
I stared out the window, watching the late afternoon sun filter through the trees. The day that should have marked my freedom had instead trapped me more firmly in Arthur’s world.
“I don’t know,” I admitted.
