(Audrey’s POV)
Sarah stared at me, eyes wide with disbelief.
“No way?” she exclaimed, nearly choking on her drink.
“Way,” I confirmed with a heavy sigh.
“I have no idea when that stubborn Alpha will agree to finalize our severance,” I said, rubbing my temples. “It feels like it’s never going to happen. He’s so… infuriating!”
Sarah squeezed my arm reassuringly. “It’s okay, it’s okay. Severing a mate bond, as long as one party is determined, it’s just a matter of time. Besides, you’ve already settled everything, just a piece of paper away. Just think of yourself as already severed.”
I tried to smile, grateful for her support, but my wolf whined inside me, still feeling the weight of Arthur’s mark on my skin.
“What about you?” I asked, changing the subject. “Has Lucas come looking for you here?”
Lucas had helped Sarah move before; I still owed him a meal for that. He definitely remembered this address. Even if he didn’t, asking Arthur would easily clear that up.
Sarah’s energy deflated instantly. Her shoulders slumped and her wolf presence dimmed noticeably.
“No, he wouldn’t dare come to your place easily,” she mumbled.
“Why?”
“He’s terrified of Arthur.”
I fell silent, not knowing how to respond. The thought that Lucas feared Arthur enough to stay away from my territory house was both disturbing and oddly comforting.
Neither of us felt like cooking later. My skills were passable but I lacked energy, and Sarah’s abilities in the kitchen were, to put it kindly, a disaster waiting to happen.
“Takeout?” I suggested.
“Moon Goddess, yes,” Sarah agreed immediately.
We ordered from the Silver Moon Diner. The rich aromas of grilled deer meat and herb-roasted rabbit filled my kitchen as we ate and chatted. Sarah occasionally scrolled through her phone, keeping up with pack gossip.
Suddenly, she gasped so loudly that I nearly dropped my fork.
“Holy moonstone, those two are having a HUGE fight at the Pack Council Office?!” Her eyes were wide as saucers.
“What?” I leaned forward, instantly alert. “Katherine and Victoria?”
“Yes!” Sarah practically shoved her phone into my hands. “Look!”
On screen was a video of Katherine and Victoria screaming at each other at the Pack Council Office. Katherine’s claws were fully extended, and Victoria was backing away, her face marked with angry red scratches. The video was spreading like wildfire through pack forums despite obvious attempts to suppress it.
“Someone’s really pushing this,” I noted, watching the view count climb by the second. “The Moonstone Pack keeps trying to take it down, but it keeps reappearing.
“No Alpha dares oppose the Moonstone Pack like this,” Sarah said, her voice tinged with awe. “Whoever’s behind this has some serious power.”
I scrolled through the comments, each more scathing than the last.
“OMG, only high-ranking wolves can play like this! The stepdaughter turned out to be a… rogue wolf.”
“One sleeps with both father and son, the other with mother and daughter. By the Moon Goddess, I’ve seen it all…”
“Seriously, this she-wolf must have some screws loose. Arthur Moonstone, the territory heartthrob isn’t enough? She has to sleep with his old man, that ancient wolf??”
Sarah clicked her tongue and studied my face. “You’re pretty bold. They’re tearing each other apart like that, and you’re watching from the sidelines with a smile. Aren’t you afraid of getting dragged into it?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world,” I replied honestly, taking another bite of my food. “The Moon Goddess knows how long I’ve waited for this day. Victoria has tormented me for years.”
My wolf rumbled with satisfaction inside me. Justice was finally being served.
“As long as they didn’t hurt you,” Sarah said protectively, her eyes flashing toward her wolf form. “Otherwise, I would’ve torn them apart with my claws. No one messes with my friend.”
“Don’t worry, I’m perfectly fine.” I had even slapped Victoria across her smug face. “Not only did I not lose anything, I’d even gained something – the satisfaction of seeing her finally exposed.”
Just then, my phone rang with Lucas Reed’s name flashing on the display.
I pushed it toward Sarah without a second thought. “It must be for you. I certainly don’t want to talk to him.”
“This wolf is really… impossible to deal with,” she said, glaring at the phone as if it had personally offended her. “I blocked him, and he just changed his number to call me. Now he’s even calling you. What part of ‘leave me alone’ does he not understand?”
“Answer it,” I advised, seeing the conflict in her eyes. “Some things need to be made clear. Otherwise, he’ll just keep trying.”
A spoiled Alpha like Lucas acted like a pup, relentless until he got his way, without considering others’ feelings. He needed a firm rejection.
“Fine,” she growled, snatching the phone.
“It really was you,” Arthur scoffed, his tone dripping with contempt. “Only Audrey is naive enough to be completely fooled by you. Nathan Snowfang, I’m warning you to stay away from her. She’s simple-minded; she’s no match for you.”
Simple-minded? I bristled at the insult, my wolf growling inside me. How dare he?
“That’s none of your concern,” Nathan said firmly, a protective edge to his voice. “I’ve always been sincere with her. Unlike you, who hurts her again and again.”
My heart skipped at his defense of me. Nathan had always been kind, always been there when I needed someone.
“What a pity,” Arthur said, his voice suddenly calm and deadly. “No matter how sincere you are, she’s still my marked mate, Arthur Moonstone’s.”
The possessiveness in his tone made my skin crawl. His wolf’s arrogance was suffocating even from a distance.
“You think you can bind her to you for a lifetime with that fading mark?” Nathan challenged, his usually calm voice sharp with anger.
My hand instinctively touched my neck where Arthur’s mate mark sat, the edges indeed feeling less defined than before.
“Are you getting anxious?” Arthur’s wolf chuckled arrogantly. “Afraid she’ll be free before you can make your move?”
“Why would I be anxious?” Nathan retorted coolly. “It’s you who should be thinking about how to deal with Emma Shadowcrest. She’s not Victoria. Offending the Shadowcrest Pack would be… unsightly.”
“She’s just a Beta’s daughter…” Arthur replied dismissively.
I listened intently, eager to hear more about Emma and Arthur, when suddenly a hand tapped me on the shoulder, startling me, and I turned to meet Florian’s amused golden wolf eyes, again!
This wolf! How could he be everywhere?! Ever since he appeared in my life, whenever I tried to eavesdrop or peek at something, I inevitably got caught red-handed. It was like he had a sixth sense for my moments of indiscretion.
I wanted to question him but stopped myself, instead tugging urgently on his jacket to move somewhere else before we were discovered by Arthur and Nathan. The last thing I needed was for them to catch me listening to their private conversation.
Florian suddenly spoke, his voice deliberately loud enough to be heard beyond the rocks: “Where do you want to take me?”
I froze in horror. Behind the rock garden, Arthur and Nathan fell silent. The sound of leather shoes hitting the ground followed immediately-they were coming to investigate.
I glared fiercely at Florian, my wolf baring her teeth in fury. He had done this on purpose!
He looked at me lazily, completely unaffected by my anger. His wolf eyes gleamed with mischief as he whispered, “Beg me?”
