Alpha’s Regret After His Pregnant Luna Left novel Chapter 14

(Audrey’s POV)

Victoria’s expression was twisted, a mix of smugness and undeniable fury. “That pack territory Arthur transferred to you-it doesn’t belong to you. It needs to be returned.”

I stared at her. I had expected a confrontation, but her persistence continued to surprise me. “Why would I do that?”

“Because you don’t deserve it!” she snapped, her voice sharp and rising. Her words echoed down the hallway, drawing curious glances from passing pack members. They pretended not to watch, but their slowed steps betrayed their interest.

I crossed my arms, staying calm despite the fire burning in her gaze. “Arthur gave it to me. It’s mine now. If you want it back, you’ll have to ask him.”

“You’re severing your mate bond!” She stepped closer, trying to assert dominance. “You are no longer his Luna. That land belongs to the rightful Luna of the Moonstone Pack!”

Her words rolled over me like waves, but they didn’t drown me. I saw through her act, her desperation covered in haughty rage. Grace stirred uneasily in the back of my mind, her hackles raised.

“Funny,” I said coldly, tipping my chin up. “Because that rightful Luna isn’t you either, is it?”

Victoria’s face flushed a deep red as her composure cracked. “Don’t test me, Audrey. You’re leaving. Stop acting like you have some great place here. You’re nothing-”

“Enough.” My voice came out firm, cutting her off cleanly. I straightened, towering over her slightly. “You can take this up with Arthur. I don’t have the time, nor the interest, to deal with you any longer.”

Before she could spit her retort, I continued evenly. “Now, about my resignation. Have you approved it?”

Her features smoothed into a cruelly satisfied expression. She smirked, brushing invisible dust off her sleeve. “Already submitted. Already finalized. I couldn’t get it through fast enough.”

Something about her eagerness to see me go made Grace snarl inside. But I didn’t give Victoria the satisfaction of seeing any reaction.

“Good,” I said simply, stepping past her. But before I left, I paused. Without turning, I added, “Funny how you’re so desperate to see me go. You must have your reasons, Victoria.”

I didn’t wait for her sputtered response. I walked away, tuning her drama out entirely.

As I entered my office, Rebecca Foster stood by my desk. Her usually bright eyes looked clouded with concern.

“She caught you, didn’t she?” Rebecca asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“She always does,” I replied, shaking my head. “She never learns to mind her own business.”

Rebecca hesitated, fiddling with the edge of a file in her hands. “Well, there’s something else. Something you might find… troubling.”

I raised an eyebrow, motioning for her to continue.

She leaned in, glancing around. “Elder William. He’s here at the administrative building. He’s furious-and he’s yelling at Arthur.”

Rebecca’s words struck through me. “Furious? About what?”

Rebecca hesitated again. “They’re saying… he found out about the mate bond severance. Apparently, he’s been scolding Arthur in front of the council.”

A mixture of guilt and worry washed over me. Elder William’s health had been unstable since his poisoning years ago. Anytime emotions ran high, it put strain on his body.

“Where is he now?” I asked, my voice growing firmer.

“Upstairs, in his office,” Rebecca said. Her eyes searched mine. “But you’re not-you’re not going up there, are you?”

I didn’t answer her question. Instead, I grabbed my severance agreement with new resolve and headed for the stairs.

As I reached Elder William’s office, I saw Daniel Hayes standing outside. His tightly laced posture and furrowed brow told me everything I needed to know.

When he saw me, he stepped forward immediately, blocking my path slightly. “Luna Audrey,” he said formally, though his anxiety shone clearly through his professional tone. His lips pressed into a grim line. “Can you… can you step in? Calm him down?”

I frowned. “Arthur’s in there?”

Daniel nodded tightly. “Yes, and… it’s not good. It’s heated, and things are being said that… they shouldn’t be saying.”

I looked past him toward the office’s closed door. Before I could step forward, loud voices filtered through, cutting through the door like knives.

“This was your idea!” Arthur’s unmistakable voice rang out, sharp and bitter.

Arthur’s brows furrowed, his jaw tightening. “You never told me that.”

I still didn’t look at him. “There’s a lot you don’t know, Arthur.” My hand unconsciously brushed over my stomach.

Elder William sat up straighter, fixing Arthur with a glare. “You will not sever the mate bond.” His voice was stern, full of authority despite his recent episode.

Arthur’s expression hardened. “This is my decision, Grandfather.”

“No,” Elder William shot back, his tone unwavering. “The mate bond is sacred. Audrey has proven herself to be loyal, kind, and stronger than most. If you can’t recognize her worth, that’s a reflection on you, not her.”

Arthur started to speak, but Elder William cut him off.

“She is the only Luna I recognize. Severing this bond would be a mistake. One you’d regret.”

Arthur clenched his fists at his sides, his anger barely concealed. But before he could argue, Elder William turned his steely gaze to me.

“And you, child,” he said, his tone softening slightly. “Is this truly what you want? To sever the mate bond?”

I opened my mouth to respond, but his next words froze me in place.

“Do you still have feelings for him?”

The weight of his question pressed down on me like a boulder.

Arthur’s sharp gaze turned to me, his dark eyes boring into mine as if searching for answers.

My throat tightened, and Grace whimpered softly inside.

If I said yes, it could make everything worse. If I said no, my answer might further aggravate the elder’s condition.

Elder William’s weathered face showed no indication of backing down. He was waiting for my answer, and I felt the weight of his respect, his concern, hanging with it.
