(Audrey’s POV)
Hearing this, I fell silent. It wasn’t until the car sped down the dark road again that I looked at Florian.
“How did you find this place?” I asked, my voice still raw from the rope burns.
Florian kept his eyes on the road and unlocked his phone, tossing it into my lap.
“Your mate sent me the address.”
I stared at the screen, fingers trembling as I read the message: “Audrey Winter. Abandoned territory compound. North Road. Hurry.”
“That’s Arthur?” I whispered, shocked.
“Who else would know where you were?” Florian replied. “Marcus isn’t smart enough to organize this without leaving traces. Someone must have tracked your pack bond.”
“But Arthur was there,” I protested, the memory of the gun aimed at me still fresh. “He chose Emma.”
“Did he?” Florian’s lips quirked. “Interesting choice for someone who immediately texted me your location afterward.”
I fell silent, unable to make sense of these contradictions. Arthur had pointed a gun at me, abandoned me, called me a burden… and then sent Florian to rescue me?
“Thank you,” I finally said, masking my confusion.
“Wolf Medical Center?” Florian asked after a while.
I shook my head firmly. “No. Just take me home. I have healing herbs.”
“What about the she-wolf I was supposed to pick up?” I asked, suddenly remembering.
Florian’s expression darkened. “There was no she-wolf. The person in question is fine.”
At my territory den, Nathan Snowfang waited by the entrance. His eyes widened at the sight of us, then darkened when he saw my burns.
“What happened?” he demanded, his wolf presence flaring protectively.
“Emma Shadowcrest happened,” Florian replied before I could speak.
Nathan reached out to take me. “I’ll take her.”
“I’ve carried her this far,” Florian said, not releasing his hold. “I can manage a few more steps.”
The tension between them crackled as we entered the elevator.
“How did you get in?” I asked Nathan, trying to ease the tension.
“I have my ways,” Nathan replied, glancing suspiciously at Florian.
“He still has territory access,” I explained. “Landlord privileges.”
Inside my apartment, Florian set me gently on the couch.
“Thank you,” I said, meeting his golden eyes. “I owe you.”
“Two meals,” he replied with his lazy smile. “That’s what you owe me now.”
After Florian left, Nathan immediately examined my wounds. “Silver burns,” he said, voice tight with anger. “You need treatment now.”
He retrieved healing supplies and began treating my wrists with gentle hands.
“These are deep,” he said quietly, barely containing his rage. “Was it really Emma Shadowcrest?”
“Yes,” I admitted wearily. “But don’t get involved, Nathan. You have enough problems with Elizabeth.”
His blue eyes flashed. “This can’t go unanswered, Audrey.”
“It won’t,” I assured him. “But I’ll handle it my way.”
As he bandaged my ankles, I asked why he’d been waiting for me.
“I wanted to offer one of my family’s vacant territory dens for your healing practice office,” he explained.
Despite my exhaustion, I felt touched. “Thank you, Nathan, but Sarah and I already found a place.”
He looked surprised. “Even with the Shadowcrest Pack trying to block you?”
“The landlord lives in distant territories,” I explained. “He doesn’t care about Shadowcrest influence.”
As Nathan covered me with a blanket, exhaustion overtook me. The last thing I remembered was his hand on my forehead and his whispered, “Sleep well, Winter’s Grace.”
“I leveraged the situation,” I explained. “Marcus was terrified of Florian and would have promised anything.”
A slow smile spread across Sarah’s face. “That’s… actually brilliant.”
“It’s a start,” I said. “But we still have a long way to go.”
Sarah took my hand carefully. “Whatever happens, I’m with you. We’ll build this healing practice together, no matter what obstacles they throw at us.”
We spent the morning planning for our healing practice. Sarah had already picked out furniture for the office, and I updated her on adapting my parents’ healing formulations.
After lunch, exhaustion overcame me again, and I took a nap. When I woke, Sarah sat at my kitchen table with a tablet she quickly tried to hide.
“What is it?” I asked immediately. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she said unconvincingly. “How are you feeling?”
“Sarah, show me what you’re hiding.”
She reluctantly handed over the tablet. “I didn’t want you to see this yet. Not until you were stronger.”
The headline hit me like a physical blow, accompanied by a photo of Arthur and Emma leaving the hospital together:
“ALPHA KING ARTHUR MOONSTONE TO ANNOUNCE MATE MARKING CEREMONY WITH EMMA SHADOWCREST”
I stared at the article, keeping my face blank despite the hollow ache in my chest. My wolf whimpered inside me, but I silenced her ruthlessly.
“Good for them,” I said flatly, returning the tablet. “That should make things simpler for our mate bond severance.”
Sarah looked at me with such naked pity that I had to turn away.
“Audrey,” she said gently, “you don’t have to pretend with me. I know how you feel about him.”
“You don’t know anything,” I replied automatically.
“I’ve known for years,” she countered softly. “I’ve seen how you look at him when you think no one is watching. How you’ve made excuses for him time and again. How you fought for your mate bond even when he gave you every reason to walk away.”
I remained silent, unable to deny her words but unwilling to confirm them either.
