Alpha’s Regret After His Pregnant Luna Left novel Chapter 142

(Audrey’s POV)

Sarah’s eyes were fixed on mine, filled with a strange mixture of determination and hesitation. The tablet with the news of Arthur and Emma’s upcoming mate marking ceremony lay forgotten between us. Something in her expression made me nervous.

“There’s something you need to know, Audrey,” she said, her voice unusually solemn. “Something I should have told you a long time ago.”

A heavy weight settled in my chest. I’d never seen Sarah look so serious before. Her wolf presence was tense, as if preparing for something difficult.

“What is it?” I asked, straightening despite the pain from my silver burns.

Sarah took a deep breath. “It’s about Arthur… and you.”

The way she said it made me feel like something fundamental was about to be destroyed. I braced myself, my wolf stirring anxiously within me.

“I’m ready. Tell me,” I said, trying to sound stronger than I felt.

Sarah’s fingers twisted nervously around each other. Then, as if unable to contain it any longer, she blurted out: “Actually… it wasn’t Arthur Moonstone who took you to the pack healer and brought you healing herbs during Inter-Pack Academy!”

For a moment, my mind went blank. The words hung in the air between us, their meaning not fully registering.

“What?” I whispered.

My wolf whimpered softly inside me, already understanding what my human side refused to accept.

“It wasn’t Arthur,” Sarah repeated, more gently this time. “It was never Arthur.”

After what felt like an eternity, I managed to ask in a trembling voice, “Really?”

Deep down, I knew it was true. Sarah wouldn’t lie about something this significant. She understood what this meant to me, how much I’d built on that foundation.

“Yes, I’m sure,” she confirmed, reaching for my hand. “I never said anything because I thought you knew. It wasn’t until recently, watching you fight for your mate bond with him, that I realized you had no idea.”

I sat in stunned silence, feeling like the ground beneath me had disappeared. All those years… all the affection, the love I’d felt for Arthur, had been built on a memory that wasn’t even real.

I was about to ask who had truly helped me-if it was Nathan Snowfang-when Sarah interrupted, somehow guessing my question.

“It was Nathan,” she said softly. “It was always Nathan.”

“No wonder…” I murmured, as pieces began falling into place.

It explained so much-Arthur’s constant suspicion of my relationship with Nathan, his confusion when I confessed my feelings to him years ago, his strange reaction when I asked him if he remembered helping me.

“How could I have been so blind?” I whispered, more to myself than to Sarah.

The realization crashed over me like a wave. I had loved the wrong wolf for eight years. Built up an entire fantasy around a memory that never happened. My wolf howled mournfully within me, feeling the depth of our shared mistake.

“Look!” Sarah suddenly exclaimed, her attention drawn to the window. “Audrey, it’s snowing! I didn’t expect this to happen.”

I turned my gaze outside, watching as delicate snowflakes drifted past my window. The sight brought back Arthur’s words from just days ago: “The pack weatherseer says it will snow this Sunday. I’ll accompany you to hunt in the fresh snow.”

A bitter smile touched my lips. He’d promised to hunt with me on the very day he pointed a silver gun at me. And now, he was announcing his mate marking ceremony with Emma Shadowcrest.

“How hypocritical you are, Arthur Moonstone,” I thought, feeling tears well in my eyes.

For years, he’d let me cling to a false memory. He’d accepted my devotion knowing it was built on a lie. He’d allowed me to love a version of him that didn’t exist, never setting me straight, never bothering to correct my mistake.

And all the while, Nathan had watched from the sidelines as I attributed his kindness to another wolf.

The tears I’d been holding back spilled over, streaming down my face. Eight years wasted. Eight years of loving a wolf who had never truly responded to me.

“Oh, Audrey,” Sarah murmured, pulling me into a gentle hug. “I’m so sorry. I should have realized sooner.”

“It’s not your fault,” I said through my tears. “I was the fool.”

Sarah stroked my hair soothingly. “You weren’t a fool. How could you have known? Some things are just the Moon Goddess’s will.”

“Sarah told me the truth,” I said, meeting his eyes directly. “About Inter-Pack Academy.”

Understanding dawned in his expression.

“Nathan,” I started, my emerald eyes holding his steady blue gaze. “You knew all along that I had the wrong wolf, didn’t you?”

Nathan reacted with a slightly furrowed brow. “What?”

I pressed on, needing to hear him confirm it. “I just found out. It was you who helped me at Inter-Pack Academy.”

The question that had been burning inside me finally emerged. “Why… didn’t you ever tell me?”

Nathan leaned forward, his presence gentle yet somehow more intense than usual. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear from my cheek.

“I was afraid you’d be upset, just like now,” he admitted, his eyes never leaving mine.

Guilt flooded through me as I thought of all the times I’d talked to him about Arthur, about my feelings for Arthur. How painful that must have been for him.

“Do you mind?” I asked softly. “That I attributed your kindness to Arthur…”

I trailed off, suddenly remembering his long-held affection for someone else. This was a complicated situation for both of us.

“I don’t mind,” he said, a gentle smile illuminating his face.

His eyes held mine captive as he continued, each word deliberate and clear. “I can wait. I will wait for the day you’re willing to look at me. I will wait until the day you stop loving him wholeheartedly.”

I was taken aback by his confession. His words clearly conveyed his romantic feelings for me. It created conflict within me due to his previously revealed long-lasting affection for another she-wolf.

“What… what did you say?” I stammered in surprise, my wolf perking up with interest.
