(Audrey’s POV)
“What do you want, Victoria?” Sarah asked sharply, stepping slightly ahead of me like a shield.
Victoria ignored her entirely, her narrowed gaze locking onto me. “You.” Her voice trembled, a mix of rage and desperation. “Where is he?”
I frowned, confused. “Who-”
“ARTHUR!” she snapped, her claws partially extending as her emotional instability began to manifest physically.
She reached out suddenly, her fingers tangling around my arm like a vice. Pain shot through me as her claws pricked my skin.
“Call him,” she demanded, her voice lowering to a threatening growl. “Call Arthur right now.”
Sarah’s voice hardened. “Let her go, Victoria, or-”
“You’ll what?” Victoria spat, her gaze flicking to Sarah briefly before returning to me. “You always have something to say, don’t you, Sarah? Maybe shut your mouth for once. Call him.”
I winced as her grip tightened, her claws drawing blood now. My free hand twitched instinctively towards my stomach, my protective instinct roaring to the surface even as I forced myself to stay calm.
“Sarah,” I said softly, my voice strained. “Just do it. It’s fine.”
Sarah’s jaw clenched, clearly furious, but she pulled her phone out, dialing Arthur and putting it on speaker.
The line rang twice before his voice came through, edged with tension. “What is it?”
Sarah’s voice was cold as ice. “You need to come to the Silver Moon Mall. Now.”
“Why?” Arthur’s tone immediately sharpened.
“Victoria,” Sarah said bluntly. “She’s with Audrey. And she’s losing control.”
There was a brief pause, then Arthur’s voice hardened further. “Five minutes. Don’t let things escalate.” The line went dead.
Victoria’s lips curled into a twisted smile as she let go of my arm, but only slightly. “Five minutes? That’s all I need.”
—
She dragged me towards the mall’s exit despite my protests, stepping out into the street where the air was thick with activity. My heart pounded, my mind racing with possibilities of what could happen next.
“Victoria, enough. This is insane,” Sarah said, following closely.
Victoria ignored her yet again, her grip tightening painfully. Her claws dug deeper into my arm, and I felt the warm trickle of blood seeping through my sleeve.
“Victoria,” I started, struggling to keep my voice steady. “You’re hurting me.”
She laughed-a hollow, almost unhinged sound. “Oh, am I hurting you? What about you, Audrey? Hm? What about the pain you’ve caused me?”
I stiffened at her accusation, though her unstable demeanor made any response feel futile.
“I should be his mate,” she snarled, her voice venomous. “I was his everything once! And now? You’ve taken him from me, you… pretender!”
Her words sent a chill through me, but I kept my voice calm. “Victoria, Arthur made his choice. You need to move on-for your pups’ sake and your own.”
That seemed to strike a nerve. Her grip faltered slightly, but her eyes burned brighter with jealousy. “Don’t you DARE talk about my pup as if you care,” she hissed.
She tilted her head, a dangerous gleam in her eye. Her hands trembled as she gripped my arm again, her claws now sharp and fully extended.
“Tell me, Audrey,” she said softly, her voice lilting unnaturally. “Why haven’t you two severed your mate bond yet? Hm? Enjoying stringing me along?”
I said nothing, swallowing the lump building in my throat. Sarah stepped forward, alarm evident now, but Victoria’s wolf flared with dominance, freezing her in place.
“Do you like his attention? Do you think it’ll last, Audrey? Do you think what you have with him is real?”
—
Arthur’s arrival was heralded by the roar of his car. He stepped out quickly, his presence immediately commanding.
“Victoria!” he barked, approaching us with quick steps. His eyes scanned the scene, his expression hardening as he saw her claws against my bleeding arm. “What the hell are you doing?”
She turned to him, her face crumpling into tears as desperation overtook her rage. “Arthur, you don’t care about me anymore! You promised you’d protect me!”
Sarah’s voice pulled me back as she shook her phone, her frustration evident. “They’re coming,” she assured me. “An ambulance or something. Just-hold on, Audrey.”
I nodded faintly, the pain in my leg starting to burn more intensely.
A young beta wolf approached us then, his concerned gaze sweeping over the scene before resting on me. “Do you need a lift to the medical center? My truck’s right there…”
Sarah hesitated briefly before nodding at him gratefully. “Yes. Please.”
I allowed them to help me to the truck, Sarah at my side the whole time.
—
At the Alpha Council Medical Center, the nurses’ whispers only deepened my anguish.
“He brought her again? The Luna? No, no, the other one, Victoria. Can you believe it?”
“Honestly, for an Alpha King, his priorities seem a little…”
I didn’t have the energy to listen further, but the words played on repeat in my mind.
Sarah clenched my hand tightly as one of the nurses approached.
“Name?” the nurse asked, glancing between us.
I opened my mouth, but my throat felt tight. Sarah filled in the details for me, her voice steady despite the tension.
Then the nurse asked innocently, “And your mate? Where is he?”
My heart cracked further, the painful realization settling in like a storm cloud.
He wasn’t here. He hadn’t even looked back.
Arthur had made his choice. And it wasn’t me.
