Chapter 231
Conrad POV
She fought going to sleep so much. I know she wants to stay awake and protect everyone, but she is more valuable when well–rested, as we will need her in battle tonight. Not to mention better for the pregnancy.
1 mind–link the medic waiting outside the door and move to shield her from the eyes of the others. The medic injects the mild tranquillizer into her leg to make sure she stays asleep for at least a few hours.
“She is going to be so mad at you when she wakes up“.
I turn and see Aalto staring at me in disbelief.
I pull her closer. “Better she is mad at me today than dead tomorrow“.
I don’t even look at the others as I leave. I carry her straight to our room and place her into bed like the fragile object I have ever held. I roll her to her side and put her pregnancy pillow under her belly, the way she likes, and tuck her in.
I kiss her gently on the head and whisper to her. “I just need you to rest, Moonlight. I will be back shortly to hold you. I just need to do something first“.
I walk down to my office and mind–link Arthur and Liam. Neither has taken the sedative yet, as they were waiting for me. I walk into my office, and both of them are waiting.
Arthur is the first to talk, and he can tell by how serious my expression is that this isn’t going to be good. “What’s going on, son?”
I take a deep breath before I start talking.
“I need to confirm some plans with both of you in case I die tonight“.
Liam shakes his head immediately. “You’re not going to die, Conrad. You’re our Alpha King. We would all die first“.
I walk over to Liam and hold him by both of his shoulders and make sure he is looking me in the eye as I say this. “Lewana is a more than capable leader to rule. She is already carrying my pups. If one of us dies tomorrow, it needs to be me. We already know there is a target on me, and I will cause as much damage to Malik as I can before Lewana has to fight him to give her a better chance.”
I can see the tears in his eyes as he realizes I’m right, but he refuses to say it. I need him to focus, and I don’t have time for this. I walk back over to my desk, pull out the folders, and hand one to each of them.
“Arthur. I am appointing you as a Duke and Crown Regent. Lewana will still be Luna Queen, but if she is busy with the pups, any fallout from the battle or struggles with the bond break, this gives you the full authority of the crown until she takes over. I need her to have support until our pups become of age. In your folder are all the details for the pack finances. From now on, you will have access to everything.”
He just nods solemnly.
“Liam. You will no longer be an associate of the Strongheart Corporation. You will be an equal partner with the same rights as I do. To vote, manage finances, and make decisions. You know the business as well as I do, so you will need to help with any transition and help Lewana“.
Liam freezes for a moment while thinking through what I just said.
“This is all temporary, right? As soon as the battle is over, things will go back to normal“.
I smile at him. “No. All these changes are permanent. If we win the war, you will still keep these titles. One thing I have noticed over the last several months is the importance of support. I know I have always tried to do everything by myself, but once the pups are here, I want to be with them. If I can. This way, you and Arthur can act on our behalf if needed, no matter the outcome of tomorrow or any other battles we might face“.
Liam stood shocked. As if confused why the paper he is holding is so light compared to the weight of the news. Arthur remains stoic. I know he doesn’t care about the title, but he will need it to protect her, and he realises that.
The awkward silence is interrupted by the knock on the door. It’s medic I mind–linked to bring the sedative. We each take our doses and leave the room.
I don’t head to my room. I head to the kitchen. “Hey, Mary“.
She’s cleaning the kitchen as if nothing is happening. “Hi Conrad. Do you want a snack?“.
