Balance of Light and Shadow (By Chandrea) novel Chapter 234

Kimberly POV

I’m hiding in the packhouse with my parents sitting behind me, and Stella curled up next to me. We knew the second the battle started, as the wind carried the screams. We all jumped when we heard the sound, and it was shortly followed by gunfire.

You can sense the panic in the room instantly go up as we won’t be able to tell which side the screams come from.

Our defenders or our attackers.

The Gammas are trying to make sure everyone in the pack has what they need. The Omegas are terrified and huddled together. All the pups are in the middle of the room with their parents. You can see that the hunter and Beta mothers are more on guard in case they need to defend the pups. No one is sleeping tonight.

My mother holds onto my father as the noises continue for nearly an hour, flinching every time there is a loud sound. For the first time, I’m jealous of the wolves. I’ve learned to notice that blank stare they get when they are focusing on their bond to check if their mate is OK. I just wish I had that with Connor. I wish I knew how he was.

Everyone’s head snaps to the sound of very loud gunfire.

That came from inside the building. Someone has made it through, and now the humans are battling the intruder.

We all freeze. Even the pups know not to make a sound and listen. The hunter mothers get out their weapons, and the Beta mothers extend their claws. They are our last line of defense.

They are in the building for mere seconds when the door splinters open and chaos breaks out.

None of the mothers is a trained fighter. They have always stayed at home with their pups and children white the men trained, and the husbands taught them the basics at home.

They act on instinct and get some swipes in, but they are no match. They are easily flung aside and land in a heap on the floor.

I reach around in panic, and as I can’t find Stella. I scream across the chaos.

“STELLA”.

The eyes of the two wolves suddenly turn towards me. I freeze, and the whole room goes silent.

I start to move away from my parents and get ready to run, but my mother grabs my hand to pull me back.

They slowly stalk towards me as the other wolves start to move aside and look for a way out. My eyes dart around the room, trying to find Stella and a way out, but I find neither.

“Hey”. A small voice yells from across the room.

The wolves turned to face the noise.

BANG. BANG.

Both wolves drop dead with a loud thud as they both take direct head shots with silver bullets.

I turn to where they were and fire, and see Stella holding a compact 9mm handgun.

Where the hell did she get a gun?

“Barricade the doors the best you can as soon as we are all out. Do what you can for medical treatment and stay safe”.

I stand stunned, holding my daughter as she snuggles into my chest, as she slowly whimpers.

“You don’t hate me now, right, Kimberly? You still want to be my mummy”.

I don’t have a chance to answer before my mother comes running over and snatches her from my arms.

“Oh my poor baby girl. We want you more than ever. You are so brave and saved everyone in this room”.

My Father walked over next and patted her back. “We couldn’t be more proud, sweetie”.

She hugged them both, and I took a step back and looked around the room, realizing that the room was still completely silent as every pair of eyes was now staring at me.

If my eight-year-old daughter can kill two shadow-possessed lycan wolves, I could survive this night.

I look at the faces of everyone in the room. “You heard your headhunter. Barricade the door. Willow, can you triage the wolves like you did before? Michelle, see if anyone needs stitches. Everyone else, get to work”.

An immense sense of pride washes over me, and I look at my parents, who are smiling back at me. I think they get it now. Yes, it is dangerous here, but I always wanted a large family, and you’re never going to get bigger than this one.
