Conrad POV
Lewana and I decided beforehand that I would lead the battle so she could focus on Malik. As soon as he launched his attack, I was ready.
The enemy wolves charged across the plains towards, and I call out to Connor.
“Are they all black with shadow?”.
He replies very bluntly. “Yep”.
I use my earpiece to contact Prince Eli and Princess Rose. ”
Launch first attack”.
Every wolf on the front line raises their weapons as a distraction as the Phoenix flies silently into the air. They deploy the gas canisters attached to their legs and release the wolfsbane gas.
The enemy starts panicking as soon as they breathe it in, looking around to work out what is going on. They start gasping more and more, suffocating as their lungs start to burn.
Others start to run to the side to escape through the forest, but we anticipated this. The Faes put up a barrier of vines so they can’t get through and succumb to the gas more easily.
Even by the flame torches we have going for light, you can see the shadows launch into the sky to form a protective barrier and try to protect what is left of their army. From Wittow’s research, we also expected this.
As soon as the shadows are in the sky, we open fire. The sound of silver bullets rings out and echoes through my territory. They are only drowned out by the sounds of the screams.
They had attacked us before when we were unprepared, and thought this time would be easier. None of our side died last time, thanks to my mate, but they were slaughtered.
I look out over the plains and see several bodies already bleeding on the ground. We have only been battling for twenty minutes, and their numbers have already been reduced by at least a third, if not half.
The shadows have now moved in front of the army to try and conceal them, which instantly puts me on edge.
I get a panicked message from Rose. “The shadows are rotting our vines on the southern side. They’re going to break through”.
“Make sure you stay safe, Rose. Get out. We will head them off”.
I turn to Connor. “They’re trying to get to the pack house.
Take your team and head them off”.
I also messaged Aalto. “Keep an eye out, Aalto. Somewolves broke through and are coming from the southeast”.
The Sirens are split into two teams with other creatures with them, North West by the lake, and near the pack house. We flooded the grounds again and made water reserves so they would be ready.
He replies. “Aye aye, Captain”.
Fucking idiot.
Suddenly, Aalto is screaming in my ear. “SHIT. Attack on the North West side”.
“You’ll fail again”
“You’re not strong enough”.
I keep battling and ignoring them. They keep trying to cover my eyes when the wolf attacks, so I’m having to use a lot of my hunter power and instincts to deflect blows.
The shadows increase the manipulation and pull forward memories of my wife. The image of finding her body, bleeding out on the floor, plays in my mind over and over again, and the grief coming to the surface tries to take hold of me. I just turn it to rage.
I start slashing at the wolf with my blade with more fury than before and eventually land a blow directly to its side.
It yelps out in pain, and I stab it again in the chest.
The shadows start to clear, but not before cackling loudly and directing my vision to the pack house.
can see two wolves have gotten through and are heading straight through the main doors.
“We told you, you would fail again”.
My stomach drops, and I take off running. I’m at least 500m from the packhouse, and it will take me a full minute to reach them. Three wolves start running alongside me.The screams of those seem to echo inside the house, but L can’t run any faster than I am now.
Hold on, Stella.
