The message he sent didn’t get the usual quick response. Bruce didn’t think twice about it. He figured Rebecca was probably caught up with something. She’d reply when she had the time.
He set his phone aside and got back to work. Hours slipped by until the sky outside faded from blue to deep gray. When he finally glanced up from his computer, his shoulders were stiff and the city was already coming alive with neon signs and busy streets. The realization hit him—it was late.
Frowning, he reached for his phone. No messages. Not even one from Rebecca.
He scrolled through his contacts and called her. The phone rang a few times, then went to voicemail. She’s probably still busy. Hospital stuff was always a headache, with paperwork and running around. It made sense that she’d miss his call.
Kane came in, dropping off some documents. Just as he turned to leave, Bruce stopped him. “Could you get a bouquet of flowers for me?”
Kane looked surprised. “Sure. What kind of flowers? Should I have them brought here now?”

Kane just stared, caught off guard by Bruce’s rare streak of thoughtfulness. Was he really heading out for a date? And with who—Dr. Campbell or Rebecca? Kane let out a sigh. It wasn’t his place to wonder.
Bruce took the elevator down to the garage. The headlights on his Maybach blinked as he unlocked it. He was about to get in when he noticed Lottie across the parking lot.

But before he could call her over, he watched Lottie dash up to Sonja, looping her arm through hers, her voice light and playful. “Sonja, let’s go get dinner!”
When did Lottie and Sonja become so close? Then again, Sonja was the kind of person everyone liked—graceful, gorgeous, talented, and genuinely kind. It was only natural Lottie would take to her.
Either way, he decided not to ask Lottie. He already knew which hospital Samantha was in. Still, something tugged at him. Was it because he didn’t want Sonja to know about his connection with Rebecca? Or was there something deeper he didn’t want to admit?
