By the time the project’s weekly meeting wrapped up, it was way past lunch. Bruce dragged himself back to his office, shut the door, and collapsed over his desk, feeling miserable. His stomach had started acting up in the middle of the meeting, but he’d powered through, just like always. Cancel because of a stomachache? Not his style. He hung on until the very end, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

He reached for his mug without thinking, only to realize the water was cold and stale. He tried to get up to grab his medicine, but the pain doubled him over before he could even stand.

Moments like this made him miss Rebecca more than ever. If she were here, she’d have noticed right away that he wasn’t feeling well. She would have found some excuse to come in after the meeting, with water and his medicine ready to go.

But Rebecca wasn’t here.

It hit him that another whole week had gone by, and still, she hadn’t called or messaged him. She seemed to be different now. Samantha’s illness must be serious if Rebecca hadn’t even reached out. She was probably focused on her mom, with no time or energy left for him.

Bruce’s phone sat right there on the desk. He almost called her. The urge was strong. But then another wave of pain reminded him what he needed to do.

First things first. He had to deal with the pain.

He pressed the intercom. Kane knocked and came in a second later.

When Kane saw Bruce, pale and sweating, he froze. “Mr. Lamont, are you okay? Should I take you to the hospital?”

Bruce shook his head, lips almost colorless. “No. Just get me my stomach medicine.”

Kane didn’t need directions. Rebecca had already shown him where everything was. He grabbed the medicine, mixed it with water, and handed it over.

Bruce drank it down, feeling the warmth settle in his stomach. Little by little, the pain started to fade.

Once he felt a bit steadier, Bruce told Kane to order some takeout—something light.
