Rebecca had just meant to bluff Greg, but she was surprised how well it worked. One sentence from her and he was already falling apart.
She couldn’t let this moment go to waste.
Rebecca stood up, her face calm and unreadable, and headed for the door. “Alright, let’s call it settled. I’m going to check in with Mitch.”
“Wait!”
She was almost out of the room when Greg called after her.
Rebecca turned back, her eyes wide and innocent. “What is it, Greg?”
Greg clenched his jaw and said, “I just ran the numbers again. I think I can spare two engineers for you.”
Rebecca’s face lit up, all cheerful surprise. “Really? That’s great news.” She didn’t bother calling out his act.
Greg gave her a tight smile and listed two names.
He had picked engineers with pretty average skills. They’d been working for two or three years, but both had only joined the company two months ago. As far as Greg was concerned, Rebecca had only asked for two assistants. She hadn’t said they needed to be top-notch.
If she couldn’t get things done with these two, that was on her, not him.
But Rebecca didn’t question it. She just nodded coolly. “Thanks, Greg. Can you brief them for me? I’ll give them their assignments in a bit.”
Greg looked like he was about to start laughing. “Of course, Ms. Harper.”
Back at the office, Greg waved the two new guys over and filled them in.
They exchanged glances, both looking pretty uneasy. One of them, a straight-talking guy, scratched his head and said, “Boss, I really don’t want to go. She’s a girl. I mean, what does she even know?”
Everyone had noticed Rebecca was young and pretty. Now she was suddenly the CEO of Sunforge Tech. Rumor had it she had some kind of special connection with Mr. Duncan.
People figured she probably didn’t have any real skills. She’d just end up making their lives harder. Female bosses… well, they’d all heard stories.
Greg just grinned and patted them both on the shoulder. “You don’t get a choice. Ms. Harper picked you herself. She wants you on her project. Don’t turn down a good opportunity.”
